Biolumencent spores and other questions
    #2619830 - 04/30/04 04:48 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Ok, I haven't been part of the growing community for 5 something years.. Last time I looked, there was talk of being able to grow biolumencent mushrooms, and I would like to know if that took of the ground, but also is there any Aussie suppliers for spores?

you can grow them, though they are not edible.  :shake:

Hi there!

There are currently thought to be naturally bioluminescent fungi in 42 species within 9 genera, all of which are basidiomycetes. Examples of bioluminescent fungi include Armillaria mellea, Mycena citricolor (syn. Omphalia flavida), Omphalotus olearius (syn. Clitocybe illudens) and Panellus stipticus, although luminescence is exhibited only by the North American strains of P. stipticus and not by the Eurasian strains. Luminescence may be present in mycelia, for example in a number of Mycena species, or in both mycelia and fruiting bodies, for example in P. stipticus and O. olearius.

I'm sorry but I don't know where You can acquire bioluminescent fungi cultures/spores in Australia  As far as I know you can only get Panellus stipticus from The Spore Works or Organja (I'd stick to Spore Works ). You'll need some woodchips though, hehe.

I know that quite a few shroomerites have tried growing different bioluminescent fungi, so You can hope that someone of them sees this and drops You a line.

Or You can try to bring some culture straight from the forest all by Yourself...  :yesnod::thumbup:

:mushroom2:Some pictures:

  • Armillaria mellea (Honey Mushroom)

  • Panellus stipticus

  • Omphalotus olearius (Jack O'Lantern)

  • Omphalotus nidiformis (Ghost Fungus)

  • Mycena chlorophos

    :mushroom2:Some interesting reading:

what makes actualy the shrooms to glow like that ?

It only glows when the shroom is alive , right ?

its phosphorus inside the mushroom (i think i remember that from highschool bio)... similar to a firefly and it will glow until the chemical in it (if not phosphorus) is gone

I don't think it's just phosphorus . It could be a realy comlexed organic chemical ...

Or maybe not even that , maybe some bio-reaction is producing energy in form of light ...

Maybe a little search on google would be the best for me

ps. you mentioned Chernobyl , I'm not that far away from Ukraine , and my parrent's told me about it ( they actually could see the fucking shroom like cloud ... ) and it was so far from us ... Well , anyway , i wanted to say that that year , the shrooms were growing here like insane , even some new species were found ... Is this becose of the radiation , well if that's the reason , then we got nicely contaminated with the radiation too ... :whoa:

Ive actually seen them before in hot summer on the Gulf Coast...they were Jack o Lantern shrooms and they are very cool...
Its possible that i might be abel to get some because i remember where they were exactually....if i ever do then several people here will get them so we can have some agar type re-production started

I guess this is just a bump up message to say thanks guys, the research and knowledge into these great mushrooms has certainly come forward since I first looked into the subject a few years ago. Too bad there doesn't seem to be an aussie source for these, or any other mushrooms though.

From what I remember the mostly these mushrooms don't glow because of phospherous or radioactivity, because apparently there are some native to Brisbane, and we haven't been hit by nuclear attack nor exploding nuclear facilities  But the glowing is from some sort of reaction the same as you see in the angler fish (how cool would that be to have one of those in a tank ??) and other creatures that have funky glowing things going on.

Anyways, peace out and thanks for your help and any other future help you guys offer

    jC

No no...things that have phosphorus in them (e.g. the scorpion and some minerals) will glow only in the presence of UV light. This is because UV kicks the electrons into a higher orbit, and when they relax back, they release light at a longer wavelength that is visible to us.

Bioluminescence is a chemical process involving the complex carboxylic acid, luciferin. In the presence of ATP, oxygen and the enzyme luciferase, it is converted to oxyluciferin in a process that releases light.

Absorbing radiation will never make anything glow
