S.A. = South America, South Africa?

Are you going to cook that up? I have tried several times to pick and prepare those, but they always deliquesce first, plus I like my beer

Nice specimen!

Alcohol doesn't appear to be a problem with comatus, IIRC. If you want to be sure, ask MJ.

I think the reaction is variable. Some people get ill, some do not.

SLice them thin and sautee them with butter and garlic and a little lemon juice and serve on toast.

But the question is, should you really eat anything that has the word "Coma" in the name? haha

cool find OOISI , I have some of these growing in my yard at the moment.

ToxicMan said:

"They're one of my favorites, but not everybody likes them (true of anything you eat). They have a distinctive but not overpoweringly strong flavor.

I like to chop 'em up, fry 'em in butter, and mix 'em in with scrambled eggs.

I have also heard that they make a really good cream of mushroom soup, but I haven't tried them that way yet.

Try doing a google search on "coprinus comatus" or "shaggy mane" and "recipe". There are tons of good recipes out there.

Make sure you get them cooked before the gills start to change color. Once they're no longer white the mushrooms seem to develop a nasty, sort of metallic taste (my opinion). Some people seem to have no problem with trimming off the parts that have changed, but try 'em and see.

Cooking them stops the deliquescence (the process of turning into inklike goo). Incidentally, even freezing them solid won't stop it - they'll still turn to goo in your freezer. After you've cooked them they can be frozen, which is the way I prepare them so they can be stored for future use."
