Wow, I finally watched it, and it was a very fascinating interview (no wonder it was so long).  Here is my short summary - feel free to add anything important I missed:

Snowden is the guy who let the world know about mass Government surveillance, and he said the US Government is now mass monitoring pretty much everything it can, whether they have suspicion of wrongdoing or not, as a result of post 9/11 fears.  The information they gather becomes a part of our 'permanent record' (the title of his book).

The original idea was for the Government to monitor everything with the hopes of finding links to terrorists within the general public.

But soon after 9/11, the Government eliminated constitutional privacy protections in favor of unlimited Government power for reasons of 'safety'.

In Oct 2004 the New York Times had first gotten a hold of a warrantless wiretapping story, but then President George Bush Jr insisted it not be published because his next election was just around the corner.  After the elections, the New York Times then wanted to run the story, but before they did, Congress passed the "Protect America Act" to protect telecommunications companies from being sued for giving everyone's private information out without a warrant.

Congress continued to pass laws that not only protected wrongdoing, but made it easier to hide what they were doing from both the people, and even from the rest of Government.

Because of the highly classified nature of mass surveillance, it couldn't be brought to light through normal whistle blowing channels, and he even showed a video of the Director of National Intelligence lying to Congress about mass surveillance programs (which he later had to admit was a lie after Snowden's revelations).

Obama originally campaigned against mass surveillance, and said he would protect whistle blowers going forward, but after he was elected, he strengthened Government surveillance programs and offered no protections for whistleblowers against the Government, such as Snowden.

Snowden said he would face trial in the US if he could tell the jury what motivated him to be a whistle blower, but similar cases in court aren't allowing that, nor allowing the word "whistle blower" to be used, because the "why" doesn't matter in court, only the "if".

Joe asked how things have changed since his revelations.  Snowden says mobile phones are now the US Government's top choice for intelligence gathering, and the Governmemt now tracks everyone's location continuously as part of our 'permanent record' as long as your phone is on.

Government and corporations both have a strong interest in collecting as much data as possible on people, and that's why they make it so hard to turn any kind of phone privacy on.

I am in a minority on the shroomery, as I frequently defend the opposing side when they have a point about something or when my side make believes something about them.  I also attack my side if I think they're wrong.  People here get very confused by that and think it means I prefer the other side.
