Going Green

A Facebook screed which prompts the question, Are people today, even/especially those who consider themselves green, more green today?

"Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the much older lady that she should bring her own grocery bags, because plastic bags are not good for the environment,.
The woman apologized to the young girl and explained, "We didn't have this 'green thing' back in my earlier days."
The young clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations."
The older lady said that she was right our generation didn't have the "green thing" in its day. The older lady went on toexplain: Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled.
But we didn't have the "green thing" back in our day. Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags that we reused for numerous things. Most memorable besides household garbage bags was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our school books. This was to ensure that public property (the books provided for our use by the school) was not defaced by our scribblings. Then we were able to personalize our books on the brown paper bags.
But, too bad we didn't do the "green thing" back then. We walked up stairs because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the "green thing" in our day.
Back then we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throw away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220 volts. Wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days.
Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right; we didn't have the "green thing" back in our day.
Back then we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana.
In the kitchen we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us.
When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.
Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power.
We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right; we didn't have the "green thing" back then.
We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blade in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the "green thing" back then.
Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service in the family's $45,000 SUV or van, which cost what a whole house did before the "green thing."
We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest burger joint.
But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the "green thing" back then?"

I'm reusing paper bags and have a fold up muji bag with me at all times to buy stuff and bring it home. otherwise we use ikea bags for main grocery shopping. had them for years.

things have changed a lot. the most mystifying thing to me is gaming, and how many young people are into that and not really anything else.

I am keeping my mind open.

hoping trump gets impeached or put away, no wonder young people are hiding from reality and lies.

Thanks for the personal anecdote. I try to minimize waste but I'm sure my energy usage is a lot more than the average of 50 years ago.

I think really our problems in this respect go back thousands of years. The current dysfunctions run deep, much deeper than the political level. Terence McKenna, of all people, said once (and I paraphrase) that you can't remedy history by fine-tuning it. You need to have a whole different paradigm, or to accept the consequences. And this would require magic. He was right. Clearly, we're not magicians. So it seems we're on a roller coaster that's out of control, and we'll just have to see whether Nature sorts it out to our benefit or detriment. To think we are in control is foolish.

I think one of the greatest paradoxical lacks of humility (virtue signalling) is humans actually thinking they can, will, or should save the environment. Earth's gonna Earth. I do not support the idea that we can stop, nor delay, global warming at all. Anyone who says we can wants your money and will probably get it. We're all fucked no matter what we do IMHO.

WITH THAT SAID...

I admire the reasoning and gumption behind keeping green, etc. I do it myself as much as possible. My state is what you could call, "All about that shit." I still do it even though I'm at heart, a cynical motherfucker, and think anything humans attempt do "do" will have little to no impact on whatever nature wants to do. Please note this does not mean I litter, burn toxic shit, or spray crap into the atmosphere. As cynical as I am my footprint is probably a lot smaller than the average person's lol.

For every piece of trash you pick up, 10 more pieces will manifest for you. 10 people going green will not offset 10 people doing 10x the damage and not giving a fuck, lol.

my 12 year old Suzuki compact has 67,000 kilometers on it - but at least half of my clothing is nylon, the other half cotton or wool or leather. and I eat meat for iron and protein.

I think it's bullshit , our contribution are but mere raindrops in an ocean compared to Titans of industry , the big money who essentially profit and keep their cogs turning by sanctioning a bunch of shit that is catastrophic towards the environment.

It's a generational thing now people are generally more aware how fucked up the world is people like to think they are making a positive impact in changing it for the better and also information is more widely available now with the internet so we are bombarded on a  daily basis it's crept into society.

I guess social media has made people somewhat more narcissistic and their is a real attachment to the ideology, beliefs and activism one indulges in because its kind of there for the whole world to see especially in these spaces which would be considered liberal in nature. That's why you keep hearing about this greenshit.  :shrug:

Correct. 99% of "activism" is arm chair virtue signaling by people who have central air, 2 cars, health insurance, and have probably never had to look for a pay check in their lives. All of the ultra vehement liberals I know are white, middle aged females with no fathers. Coincidence?

It's not disparagement, humans are defiantly fucking shit up and should exercise some restraint but what I'm saying is in the grand scheme of things the big boys don't really care as long as they can turn a profit , til that changes our little efforts are all in vein.

Pretty much but not always have met many people who deprive themselves just to keep up this sense of morality/ideology. I mean like 20 year olds who eat out of bins by pure choice and call it 'recycling' lol. Instead of working, they will get dog and sit on the street and beg for money.

I've worked at a veritable plethora of natural food stores in my time, and let me tell you, some of THE most smug, self-righteous pricks/cunts I've ever, EVER come across - both male and female - were always some confusing combination of vegan/atheist/feminist/anti-establishment-but-unironically-collectivist-minded folk. It's not even a contest. The more stickers they have on their car, the further away from a rational discussion you should attempt with them. It's like a snake's "warning" colors, lmao.
