I confess I have mold trouble still. Got quite a haul to throw away today. My sterile technique is just awful. Mostly G2G sloppiness. Gonna do some cleaning today.

Oh god I totally understand that! Lmao I have ALOT of prints that are dirty as all hell, like I swabbed some AA+ spores to agar and only 2/4 plates are not contaminated, but they have no good growth either

The other 2 got mold so quick the spores never had a chance to germinate

Literally atleast half my plates end up so dirty I can't even find where to begin cleaning it up :rofl2: the trick ive found that helps is to start up as many plates of one kind as you can lmao

Its funny with trading prints around, sometimes I get a print thats pretty much just mold spores and then sometimes you get a super super clean print that would almost feel safe enough to put straight to grain  theres never a middle ground it seems like

Confession 1: Some family medical shit has kept me from doing all the work I want to do... and I really need to scale back my work for a while :frown: I'm trying to figure out what will be best, but for the next 3-4 months I'll need to head out to a city 5 hours away every other week for a few days at a time. It just makes the mycology work both overwhelming (since I need down time too) and it's all so spaced out.

Confession 2: I really don't like rye... I feel bad for saying this! Everyone is like "Rye's top-tier spawn food!" and... I can't get anything but over-cooked grains OR contams (they're not happening on other grains, so it's the rye... and it's likely from not being saturated enough when cooked, which fine, whatever). I was having some minor problems with oats, and bought both rye and millet. Millet has been nothing but basically perfect... so I'm going to just use that?

Confession 3: All my agar plates are totally covered and I haven't transferred them yet :uhoh: Now I'm paranoid and this will likely cause me more work since I'll want to clean them up an extra couple of transfers to feel better. :facepalm3:

Just take one transfer from.... Not the edge, if you're worried about it. It usually works out fine. If the culture was clean, in my experience, it usually still is.

True, true. I've just had so many issues lately that I'm extra paranoid right now. I've done transfers from like the 2/3 out position before when I go back and it's usually fine. I store them in my "lab" with my flow hood anyways, it's probably the cleanest room in my house (also, like saran wrap etc).

:whathesaid:

I use plates that go to the edge, don't overthink it unless they are spilling out over the edges I guess lol  I've only seen gourmet do this, never had cubes do it, not saying they can't.

Best of luck girl, you have so much shit on your plate try not to sweat the small stuff.

I had one of my KO's do that in a no pour,  I still put it to grains  I don't think I've seen any cubes climb up the sides yet

But as long as the culture was clean it should be good

May be hippie jargin, but I absolutely believe that your energy has more an affect than you think.. I see a lot of guys taking crazy precaution, and continue to have issues: and I wholeheartedly believe ONLY bc they expect/worry it to fail... Which brings me to my first confession...

Outside of dipping my scalpel for flaming, I've not touched a bottle of alcohol for WEEKS.. Not even sure the jar I place my tools into is even alcohol anymore:Was 70%, and left open more than once... May try plain water, or even dry flaming... I'm on this kick about putting forth as little effort as possible without diminished results lmao... we all have our thing I suppose...

Confession two... Not sure why, but I'd been having issues getting logged in from my computer since the site was hacked: not sure what I was doing wrong, but received a link to a place to reset cookies or some shit, and long story short I'M IN... No more excuses, so will be posting tek series in full(or parts) in the next few days... Species specific gourmet teks are not ready yet, But are actively being worked on around everything else around here lol... Right now though; agar checks!

I used to dip ... until I switched to a propane torch for my flaming. I was using disposable scalpels at the time, which have plastic handles. It totally lit on fire and started melting very quickly, and I ALMOST DOUSED IT IN THE LITTLE CUP OF ISO. I'm not sure how I stopped myself from doing it in time, but from that point on I decided I shouldn't have a container of ISO open around a very hot flame ever again.

Now my main issue with scalpels is how to not get it so hot because I started using a hobby/exacto knife and the shaft is full metal. I'm going to either wrap it in something or get multiples...
