Looking for a van to live in and produce my own bio-diesel or other diy fuels, keen to hear about the experiences of others regarding this?

its pretty basic, getting raw material to make it from is the hard part, filtered used cooking oil is popular but hard to come by
once you have the oil you just need to process it, see: transesterification, which can be done using lye, lye can be made from running water through wood ashes, the lye separates the lipids from the oil, then you can use the fatty solids to make soap too
when soybean oil was cheap many years ago i would buy it new at a restaurant supply and put it straight into the tank of my diesel mercedes, ran it for about 20,000 miles before the price went up too high, no engine damage like some will tell you, in fact it cleaned out the gunk that was already in there, i have 390,000 miles on that engine and its still strong

Awesome stuff, do you know any oils that'd be best to avoid?

for starters you cant put unprocessed oil in any other engine than an old mercedes diesel, the injection pumps wont be able to handle it
as for making biodiesel i dont think it matters much, price and availability will be your major concern, and you will want to make sure that the engine you have will not be damaged by biodiesel, some newer ones have sensitive injection pumps that either wont work well or will be outright destroyed by biodiesel
if you can get an older (pre 1999) mercedes diesel you can run almost anything, i even used filtered used motor oil a couple times just to see if it worked, the main problem with oils is the viscosity, if it gets cold the oil will clump up and not flow, but there are fuel heaters for that

What do you think of using plant-based oils as the input? Are there any plants that would be well-suited for large scale production, which can be grown without tearing down trees for more land (ie can be grown on marginal/second-rate soil currently unused)?
