Any electricians? Fixed that mother fucker!
    #26191795 -

I'm having a minor issue and thought I might be able to get some help here.

I'll make it simple...

Moved into new house. Stove wasn't working so we bought a new one. I installed a new 3 prong cord.

Now, the breaker trips after a few minutes.

It's a single pole 50a breaker. The stove also plugs into another cord.

The stove should be a double pole, correct? And what the fuck is up with this other cord it plugs into?

Maybe your new stove uses more than 50amps. That or theres a short somewhere on that strange black cable you got there.

Bad Breaker, Needs To Be Replaced.

Edit: Sorry Didn't Read The Post Right, The Stove Plug Should Not Be Coming Off Of Flex Like That, It Should Be Mounted To The Wall.

Also The Plug Itself Needs To Be Checked To Make Sure The Hot Wire(Black) & Neutral Wire(White) Aren't Crossed. If The Hot Touches The Ground Or The Neutral It Will Arc Out & Flip The Breaker.

You Should Call Your Landlord Or Local Electrician To Come & Troubleshoot It. Don't Try & Fix It Yourself, & Only Touch The Breakers, Dont Touch The Inside Of The Panel, Any Lugs Or Bars. (You Probably Already Know This But Just In Case).

I do and I have a bit of background fucking with it. I'm still debating on calling an electrician or not.

I'm thinking about just adding a new outlet and run all new wire. From there I can tap into the panel and connect to the proper breaker.

50 amps is a lot. If you don't have a multimeter, i'd guess that the extention cord the stove is plugged into is fucked. Plus that doesn't meet code. Tell the land lord to fix it before it burns down the house.

A hot neutral would trip instantly.

And that panel looks ghetto as fuck.

Oh, so double pole breaker takes 240, 2 lines of 120.

You have a single pole, so you are only getting 120. Half the voltage means double the amps, so it will keep tripping.

You need a new breaker panel and for it to be wired in, plus hard wiring the 240 outlet into the wall for the stove. I hope you didn't blow all your money on the stove. :devito:

My thoughts too..

Would installing all new everything not work?

How much do you think something like that would cost?

depends. Rewiring a house ain't cheap. If you only need to replace a panel and wire in the one outlet, maybe under $700.

If you only have 1 pole service coming from the utility for an old house it might be a couple of grand.

Or go to the used furniture and building supply store, or auction sales or whatever and find an old ass electric stove that is only 120v single pole. That would probably be like $50, but take more time to find one.

How old is the house?

He has 240V there. Both 50A breakers should go to the oven and they should be tied together, but aren't. With GE panels it is possible to get both mini breakers on the same phase, but that doesn't look like the case here. You should have 240V between both hots on the breaker. Try turning them both off and then back on. Does the circuit trip with the stove unplugged?

If that isn't the main-panel then you need to seperate the grounds and neutrals.

Also make sure you have the neutral wire going to the neutral on the outlet and on the oven terminal. It looks right at the terminal, but the outlet could be wrong.

What do y'all think about getting a double pole GE breaker, doing away with the 2 50s, and tying both poles in the double?

Ok..

I checked the receptacle and got 240 with both legs and 120 each when grounded out.

I also confirmed that both the 50 single poles are for the range.

Like some said, the 2 single poles should work, but they are not and only 1 leg is tripping the breaker.

It only trips when I try and use the heating elements. If I plug in the stove and leave it be, it will stay on all day.

I also checked my voltage going into the board and plugs. Everything checks out...

IF it hold with the oven unplugged then the problem is most likely in the oven. Maybe one of the burner is shorting out?

I fixed it!

:rocketcrotch:

This morning I really got into it and noticed said breaker was in bad shape. Even though I checked the tightness yesterday, I wanted to double check.

I killed the power, removed the leg, and inspected the screw and port. The breaker had burn marks and the screw/ hole felt stripped. I pulled the whole breaker and sure enough.

I ran to home Depot, grabbed the breaker and just installed. No trips!

This would explain why only 1 leg was tripping

Thank you for everyone's help and insight. It's much appreciated.

I would get a new breaker box.  That one looks very old and a fire hazard.  Wouldn't hurt if you have the money and increased the houses total amp supply.

Especially if you want a grow.

No, it's fine, unless the bus bar is burned out or some unseen damage. GE makes a decent panel. I charge about $5000 to upgrade a service and that it a really good price. I doubt he wants to do that until needed.
