verm is fine. myc in the verm is not all that uncommon. in fact, i think putting it under the faucet introduced far more risk to the cakes.

Yes i certainlly wouldnt put my cake under the faucet. You should be able to scrape it away with a fork...its not that hard...but it shouldnt make any difference (you may be more susceptable to contam...maybe)

From what I've read, you shouldn't be worried about running your cakes under a faucet because of possible contams. You should be worried about destroying all the myc in those cakes from that gigantic waterfall you just put them under. Water droplets to the myc on your cakes are like someone dumping a swimming pool of water onto you.

Good Luck,

I used to open the jar scrape off the excess and whatever was left behind stayed. Never removing the cake from the jar. Pour the water right in the jars for the dunk.

Good luck!

Quote:

It all starts with the spray from the hand sprayer. The first rule is to never directly spray the fungus. This initial spray is comprised of water droplets that are giant ponds of water in relation to the fine mycelial networks of the fungal threads. In culture, the droplet of water will drown the micro world of the fungal structures and thereby inhibit or contaminate growth. But the airborne molecularized water floats into the fine structures and gives the fungus humidity as needed. Molecularized water is another way of describing water that has evaporated into the air.

No, I'm not very familiar with dunking. But, according to the PF Tek...I'm correct in my assumptions.

A slight modification of the pf tek procedure can eliminate the problems with the dry verm layer. I dont know about you all but the sight of that dry verm falling around the cake as it colonizes is frustrating. I know it doesnt pose any real problems ,but it sure makes it look like a mess in there. Here is a tried and true method I came up with for fixing this problem as well as the verm getting wet over the course of colonization.

After you fill the jars with the substrate leave the half inch or so at the top like usuall, but dont put the dry verm in just yet. Instead clean the glass very well and put a circle of Tyvek over the top of the jar. This circle should be big enough to overlap the rim by around an inch all the way around. Now carefully push the Tyvek disk down untill it touches the top of the substrate. Make sure you tuck it in good so that it makes a nice pocket and then put your dry verm into it. You should have enough Tyvek sticking out around the edges to fold down aroung the threads of the jar before you put the lid on. You now have a layer of verm that is isolated from the substrate by the Tyvek disc. So ,not only do you have a double layer of protection, you also have a jar that will stay clean as you watch all that pretty white myc grow. Besides looking much more neat I believe that as the verm becomes wet using the standard pf tek it loses some of its usefullness as a contamination barrier.

I hope I have explained this well enough that you can get a clear picture of what you should have when the jar is ready to pc. I guess pictures of each step would be best. Maybe I will do that and post it some day.

Good Luck
Mykey

that tyvek thing isnt as good as the dry verm layer... i saw a lot more contams right at the jar lid when i tried tyvek...

to answer the q, you can scrape that wet dry verm away with your finger, just wash your hands first... when the cake is fully colonized it is remarkably resistant to contams, so birthing cakes with your bare hands isn't a problem... unless you're planning to case them, in which case ignore what i just said, because you need to be extra clean when you case them...

You dont even have to remove the verm from the bottom of the cakes, you can just leave it, there is no reason for removing it.
You should aslo put a little of moist verm on top of the cakes.

All you need to remove is what you can, if it doesnt fall from the jar you dont need to remove it, there is no reason to, go read man.

The dry verm layer is still there in the method I described. THe only difference is that it is held snugg against the lid by the Tyvek so it wont get wet or fall down between the cake and the jar as the cake shrinks. Kinda helps the dry verm layer to keep it's maximum effectiveness by making it stay dry and stay put. I knew pictures would have made my poor description of the process easier to follow. This technique works really well so I guess I will have to get off my lazy ass and fire up the digital camera!

Yep, I totally agree with you on that one. You want to get them clean as you can without going overboard and bruising up the cake.
