L-Tryptophan (sp?) Questions
    #2614157 - 04/29/04 12:08 AM (19 years, 11 months ago)

Hey,
I've heard that in experiments one could triple their psylocybin content by adding some L-trytophan (sp?) I've got a few questions. First off, what is this? Second, is it legal? Third, where can I get it. Fourth, does anyone have any personal experience with this? And fifth, is this guaranteed to work, or is it a chance thing, and is there any new risks when trying this?
Thanks,
P2K1

You have a lot of questions. I can answer some of them.

1. L-Tryptophan is an amino acid which, in humans, is metabolized to serotonin. It's the stuff in turkey that makes you sleepy. It also shares the same structural backbone as 4-HO-DMT, and it has been speculated that *ahem* certain fungi will readily metabolize l-tryptophan into 4-HO-DMT. I'm skeptical.

2. The US FDA placed a ban on L-Tryptophan due to certain toxic compounds produced in its synthesis.

3. *shrug*

4. Yes. Just not me.

5. Death and taxes, my friend, death and taxes.

Secret question 6. See #2.

I think there are overseas vendors that will mail these things to you. Mind you, you're risking it when you deal with these things so be careful.

There are studies showing that adding tryptophan can increase Psilocyn rather significantly but psilocybin production decreases just as significantly, which is not ideal.  I believe it can be obtained legally within the US but here is the link to the study in the FAQ's which I'm sure you checked out already

Also a search will bring up many other threads about this.

Tryptophan is still available for pets, check out this supplier.

Would adding supplemental phosphorous help? There are several readily available sources. You can purchase Triple Super Phosphate at garden stores or Ammonium Phosphate or Diammonium Phosphate at brewing supply stores (used as yeast nutrient supplements).

I read about a study done on this, actually its most likely in the shroomerys archives. It was found that adding tryptophan didnt produce signifiacntly more potent mushrooms. However adding tryptamine did produce mushrooms that were roughly 3 times more potent than the most naturally potent mushrooms out. These mushrooms came out somewhat deformed though.

No you're right. I jumped too quickly, that link is for tryptamine, not tryptophan.
Nice catch.

L-Tryptophan is available as a pet diatery supplement, and is not just good for biosynthesis of psilo. but is also good for an easy synthesis of DMT, which is another fun chemi in itself, hehe

Yes, tryptamine. Tryptophan is downregulated, for people who are physically incapable of using the search engine.

The synthesis would be easy if you could get the reagents. The reagents also seem really easy to make, if you know inorganic . The easier way, if you only wanted to get high, would be to grow phalaris grass and a simple a/b extract.

Thanks for the link.

I hope that search bit wasnt directed at me, as i did try erowid and google before posting.

Either way, this 'simple' synth doesnt seem so simple to a non-chemist at all.  :tongue2:
