Actually it is the same and that's not true. The suicide rates for transgenders is extremely high. If surgery and other modifications made them happy it wouldn't be so high. The reason he said I'm preaching to the choir is because everything I'm saying is true. Mental health professionals don't give a shit about the public so that doesn't mean anything! They literally give high doses of adderall to children! Just a generation ago they was putting electricity through people's brains against their will! Comparing yourself to a cancer patient is freaking ridiculous by the way.

What’s your experience, what way has it benefited you? Did you benefit merely because you felt you were getting what you wanted? Someone taking you seriously, listening to you, providing support and pharmaceuticals alleviated some depression of some sort or...?

I would never kill myself, and I believe your numbers likely aren't as high as you believe they are. Though I was in danger of dying of an overdose when treatment was still unavailable to me.

While it is true that LGBT people statistically attempt suicide at a higher rate than non LGBT people, there are a number of factors involved which are correlated with increased suicide rates including things like bullying, geographic area, trauma, co-occuring psychiatric conditions, availability of support from peers/family and etc. So if the potential for suicide is truly why you are against medical treatment for people like me, it doesn't help to reduce this risk if you are working to further ostracise this population.

In general suicide rates across all populations in the US increased from 1999 to 2014. Transpeople are at a higher risk of death from suicide when treatment is unavailable to them.

Before HRT, I was a high school dropout who couldn't make progress academically, had incurable depression, hated myself and couldn't hold down a job no matter how hard I tried. Between the ages of 15-26 I could barely even leave my room. I started taking whatever drugs I could get my hands on in an attempt to feel anything other than miserable, in increasing amounts and often. In a life changing breakthrough due to an ER visit (there were dozens of ER visits prior) for an overdose, I decided to open up about my issues to the ER social worker and learned that my insurance had started covering transition related services since 2016. A couple days later I started working with a doctor who got me started on hormone replacement therapy. As soon as they added anti-androgens I finally realized why I had become dysfunctional since around the time that puberty started for me in middle school. Testosterone at male levels for whatever reason literally makes me want to die, makes me unable to love myself, makes me irrationally angry and violent, makes me repress my sexuality, and the removal of testosterone plus introduction of estrogen made an immediate difference in my ability to make progress in my life. For whatever reason, my brain is not wired to function under the hormone levels of my biological sex, and becomes functional when this is corrected with hormone replacement therapy.

So I stuck with HRT and was able to get my high school diploma, and right now I'm three quarters away from finishing my college degree, which was previously unattainable for me since I couldn't organize myself well enough to succeed in college courses. Because I could finally function, I started making massive changes in my life and improving myself a step at a time, and have been full-time for a few years now. For the first time in my life I have hope, love myself, and have a wonderful boyfriend.

All because I learned my brain functions better with different hormone levels. Because for whatever reason, male testosterone levels makes it impossible to be a functioning person. I wouldn't wish for anyone to be born with this hormonal issue but I'm happy that we live in a time where it can be treated medically. There have been gender deviant people in human civilizations since prehistoric times. If treatment can help others the way it helped me then I feel it's wrong to deny it to those of us who seek it.

I agree that alternative treatment/therapy should be attempted before transition options are explored, because this isn't a cure all for everyone and people who don't know themselves and end up with regrets from rushed decisions learn this the hard way.

It is better to accept what you are, and that's exactly what I did. I accepted that God chose this for me and I was wrong to try to deny it and go against His will.

Whatever that percentage is, it's far from 100%. I've never attempted suicide and never will. The 40% figure which I think you're referring to is a misrepresentation of the data by the people spreading anti-transgender propaganda. Suicide is a problem for everyone, and is not limited to people like me.

Cancer is a disease that can lead to death if it is left unaddressed, and the same goes for severe cases of gender dysphoria.

Introduction
It may come as no surprise that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people are vulnerable to suicidal thoughts and behavior. In recent years, the media and social campaigns have highlighted the tragic suicides of several young LGBTQ people who ended their lives because of relentless bullying or family rejection. Preventing suicide and enhancing resilience is clearly one of the most critical aspects of health care provision for LGBTQ patients. Health centers have an opportunity to provide programs and care with the goal of promoting self-acceptance, positive social engagement, and improved mental and physical health of LGBTQ people in the community.
This publication offers a brief summary of what is known about suicidal behavior and risk among LGBTQ people, followed by information and resources for health centers to help both young and old LGBTQ people get support and tap into internal and community resilience.

What is known?
Actual suicide rates among LGBTQ people are not known because sexual orientation and gender identity are not reported in death records.
What we do know about suicidality among LGBTQ people is through surveys in which people self-report suicide attempts and ideation. According to a number of regional and national studies, LGBTQ adults and youth face an extraordinarily elevated risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior. LGBQ adults have a two-fold excess risk of suicide attempts compared to other adults. Among transgender adults, the lifetime prevalence of suicide attempts is 40%.
Suicide risk in LGBTQ people is thought to be highest during the teen years and early 20s. In 2015, more than 4.5 times as many LGB-identified high school students reported attempting suicide in the past 12 months compared to non-LGB students (29.4% vs 6.4%); 42.8% of LGB youth seriously considered suicide.5 Youth who are bisexual or questioning their sexual orientation and/or gender identity are even more likely to experience depression or suicidality than their LG-identified peers.
An often overlooked population when discussing suicide are older LGBTQ adults (65 years and over).
Older adults in the general population accounted for close to 17% of fatal suicides even though they currently make up about 15% of the total U.S. population. Again, the percentage of completed suicides in LGBTQ people is unknown; however, older LGBTQ adults have endured a long life of stigmatization, and some studies have found higher rates among LGB older adults compared to their straight peers.

Why are LGBTQ people at high risk?
Research has found multiple factors associated with suicidal behavior among LGBTQ people, including isolation from family and peers, a history of mental health issues (e.g., depression and anxiety), substance use disorders, and victimization (e.g., being the target of bullying; being abused). All of these risk factors stem from the stress created by living as a stigmatized minority (often referred to as minority stress). Even today, with increased awareness and social acceptance in the U.S., many LGBTQ people find they must contend with harassment, discrimination, and bias enacted by peers, family, colleagues, workplaces, houses of worship, schools, places of public accommodation, and health care settings. Anti-LGBTQ attitudes can become internalized, leading to further stress and potential for suicidal thoughts."

---

So the fact is that the number of transgender people who successfully attempt suicide is not known.

Another fact is that consistently using the correct name and pronouns for trans people can reduce their rates of anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts to almost the same levels as their cisgender counterparts. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29609917)

My attention span is terrible, I have a hard time watching tv programs...even sometimes people talking makes me drift and zone out but I digress...

I don’t see how any of this makes sense as all males would be “dysfunctional” but angry aggressive violence does come with being a male but some females are too...

Did you have excess amounts of testosterone and how does this relate to the conflicting gender association? Kinda breaking down...you said or believe testosterone suppressed your sexuality...With all due respect and I apologise in advance for any offence with me speaking my mind,  it kind of sounds like you where gay and just couldn’t handle it.

I don’t have the full story so I’m open to it all.

Whatever it is it has been some  shit you’ve had to deal with eh?!

I understand it's difficult to really make sense of but it's my lived experience. Prior to transitioning I refused to explore sexuality because of the feelings associated with it and refused potential sexual encounters from both men and women - I literally ran away from it. However, I always thought that I wouldn't limit myself to only men or only women even during the time that I was asexual and not open to exploring sexualty, so I feel it's different from being unable to accept being gay or bisexual.

How testosterone relates to the gender association? I wouldn't say it's super important in relation to gender, but it does have a significant impact when it comes to depth of emotional expression as well as interpersonal relations. I always considered myself female internally since around eight years old and this was natural to me and important in the way I engaged the world. With the physical and mental changes brought on by the hormonal impact of male puberty, it became impossible to engage the external world in a way that reflected my true internal self and this is likely what was causing my distress. I was two people, my internal self and the person I thought I had to be. But the person I was forced to be was not really me or an actual person, and the person I was internally wasn't allowed to be a real person. So during that time I was really nobody.

Before hormone therapy I had standard male levels of testosterone. After beginning HRT, this was reduced to the typical level you would find in a ciswoman. With the reduction in testosterone and the physical and mental changes brought on by female hormone levels, my inexplicable depression and distress faded away to the point where I felt I didn't have to be two people anymore. And so I finally had the courage to accept myself and engage the external world in ways that my previous self had been too afraid to explore.

Mhm. I've been through a lot and I'm happy the worst of it is finally behind me. It was so dark that I had always thought I wouldn't make it to age 30 but here I am.

I agree that bringing positivity into the world is a wonderful thing, especially when there's so much suffering here on Earth. In everything I do I carefully consider what would please the Divine and do my best to avoid adding to the needless suffering in the world.
My relationship with the Divine is based off of mystical experience rather than dogma and I don't personally see this as a belief, but that's just me~

I'm very happy to hear that sharing more about myself has helped you understand this better.

It would be great if more people can move past their prejudice and come to understand that this was literally a life or death issue for some of us. Maybe someday.
