10x20 Seedling Tray Incubation / Fruiting Combo

Perlite is a mess and I’d rather not deal with it. I was thinking a clean setup might be a 10x20 seedling tray with humidity dome on a seedling heat mat for incubation and fruiting (winter in a poorly-insulated house). Is this workable?
Thanks in advance

So your not growing cake? Or are you planning on spawning cakes to a tray?

I have used humidity tray/domes for fruiting grain or pf cakes before. As long as you case with a lil verm not perlite you'll be fine just treat it more like a mono hand fan it a few times a day and mist lightly often on the inside of the dome.

That can work but I wouldn’t use the heating pad though unless it’s cold as fuck. Someone a while back had decent results doing the same thing but with coir instead.

I think if you are in a very low humidity environment like AZ the tray/domes will simply not retain enough humidity. So your environmental humidity makes or breaks the use of trays but you can always spawn to a tray cover with foil til it colonizes then place the tray inside of a clear plastic tote with holes and poly if your seed tray is not adequate.

Monotubs and dubtubs are more tried and tested. You could probably get a seedling tray to work but they aren't all that durable . Besides if you are new it's better to stick with more established methods till you get a better understanding of how and why things are done certain ways. If you are doing cubes a heat mat really isn't needed either, they will colonize just fine at room temperature. Incubators are an outdated idea that nobody uses anymore.

In the winter the temps are around 16-20°C in this particular room. Heat pad would bring it up to proper fruiting temp and maintain humidity.

Toxic Enigma — Thanks. Dubs and monos would work fine, too. My issue is the only space available is quite chilly in the winter (16-20°C). A heat mat would be set to bring it to room temp and no higher. I’m reading here that using a heat mat to achieve room temp is not ideal, so I’m not sure what I can do in this situation.

That's not all that cold. If you're able to enclose, say, a wardrobe-sized area, your lights would probably emit enough heat to get you up close to ideal temperatures. Just provide fresh air regularly.

I know an excellent cultivator that grows out of those little seedling trays with domes. Loose the heat mat though and heat the whole room if you need heat.

I personally really like using seedling trays with humidity domes. They work great. I don't use a liner with them, no poly or MP tape and I can still regulate how much air they get. And harvesting from them is way easier than harvesting from a tub or trying to lif a sub out of a tub to harvest which can have disasterous results.

I say rock on with the trays and humidity domes. But!.... lose the heating mats and spring for the triple thick trays.

Nice to know they work, I had thought about trying them as an experiment. Never seen anyone use them before.

Still haven't done pans so can't say from experince but i don't see why it wouldn't work.
Just give it a shot. You don't have much to lose but you have everything to gain.

Aha, this is exactly the info I was looking for. I have stacks of 1020 trays and humidity domes laying around because I've been gardening and starting my own plants from seed for years, and was thinking they might work great for mushroom cultivation instead of buying a bunch of sterilite tubs. But everyone says 4" deep substrate and the trays are only 2.5" deep, so wasn't sure. FYI - the BEST place for 1020 trays is Bootstrap Farmer, they are super sturdy and last years and years, BPA free food grade plastic, fairly cheap too when you buy in bulk.
