Substrate Jars or glass?
    #2617939 - 04/29/04 08:06 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Hello hello, Im planning on making 12 jars full of rye so I can inoculate blabla... well, the problem is, that I can't find anywhere those wide mouth jars youre supposed to need, I can only find regular mouth jars (those that get thinner at the top) of about 400 ml... Shall I buy these or use just a drinking glass? somebody told me that rye needed a lot of air so Icouldnt used drinking glasses, I also wonder that if Rye doesnt get sticked alot like PF substrates do, It may do nothing when I put the jars backwards wso I can put it in the tupperware... what do you think I should do? Thanks in advance...

If you're doing rye, I'm assuming you'll be casing so you won't be birthing a cake, so it's not really necessary to have wide-mouth jars

what is to birth a cake? widemouth jars are necessary so the cake (whatever it is conformed of) wont get all destroyed but its more likely to happen with PF susbtrates I think than with rye...

Birthing a cake is taking it out of the jar. It is more likely with PF rather than rye, but thats only because of a technicality - its impossible to happen with rye, because rye is used for casings, not cakes.

I mean, if I put rye on that normal jar, put the aluminum foil and everything it wont be a problem when birthing cause since it is grain and it is not so predisposed to getting all sticky I thinki it probably wont matter.. what do you think?

just because you use rye doesn't mean you have to case

Ok, lets clear something up. Are you going to be using rye flour or grain. I wouldn't do cakes with grains. The rye flour works good but it clumps up a little more and the mix is a little different.
