Can Mycelium beat out bacterial contam?
    #26178813 -

I nocc'ed up 6 BRF jars 10 days ago. At day 2-3 I noticed some deep yellow discoloration and a foul, sour smell and decided it was probably bacterial contamination. I hadn't gotten around to tossing the cakes yet. (This was what made me decide skimping on a pressure cooker wasn't going to work and I bought one right after for the newer jars)

When I went to check on the newer (non contaminated) jars, I noticed that one of the original 6 BRF jars had myc growing on the parts of the cake with bacterial contamination at all inoculation points. I had heard fungus can produce antibiotic compounds, but I didn't think that spores would be able to germinate in a bacterial infestation and thrive. I'm fairly positive it is myc. It's too white to be cobweb and doesn't resemble the beginnings of trich or any other molds. This is my first grow, but it looks like myc.

Is this possible? Did I just get my hands on some good genetics against bacteria?

Sure, sorry for the bad quality. The growth us a bit small for the camera to focus on.

Edit: just a note: The jars are big because it's all I had at the time and I used micropore tape on the holes. I did have an inoculation site in the center.

Does look bacterial. What kind of lids are you using?

Regular Mason jar lids with holes covered by micropore tape. The contam was due to poor sterilization.

The myc growth happened after the bacteria had already presented, but it's worth noting that the bacteria growth stopped and never covered the entire cake. The smell is going away too.

Is it possible for myc to beat out the bacteria or do you think the bacteria just died on it's own giving the myc a chance to grow?

Once it’s bacterial it’s always bacterial but the mycelium can still grow. The micropore tape can also be part of the problem if your not using 3 or 4 layers.

You can give it a few days to see what happens, but you're not likely going to recover.

It sounds like you know what you did wrong. Every grow is a learning opportunity, and the best you can do is use that experience for your future grows.

Good luck!
