You won't accidentally tear up a lid and jars come with them. Just easier to work with, wouldn't want to poke 4 holes in foil and hope i don't tear up that foil while innoculating. Lids stay nice and tight against the dry verm layer so it's not going to shift around much when handling, a loose layer can lead to failure.

Hmm, fair, fair.
Cheers.

Using the Updated PF-Tek method, how long does it typically take to see the first pins once you've put your cakes under the light?

Thanks. :-)

Hi there!!

Complete noob here and I never did a batch in my life.
I decided to follow this guide and I'm confused about the field capacity part.
Do I squeeze the water out before adding the BRF or after?

In step 2.2 it is stated to squeeze out the water and in step 2.3 the water is added (again) so that got me confused.

Thanks.

those gifs are just to show you what field capacity looks like, follow the water ratio in the tek and you should be just fine.

Thank you for your service. I am thick headed, sadly, and I would also like to know if the verm should be at field capacity or the verm+BRF.

Second question.

That being the case, any advantage for a SGFC? Seems like everything get over complicated but if you're telling me someone prefers doing less work and it works better... That sounds good. So HC > SGFC?

In terms of tight fitting lid, does that mean just the lid that the pot came with or specifically a pot with a lid that needs some effort to put on, like with a rubber ring or something?

Haha just the lid that came with the pot or any lid that fits snugly

The only lids with rubber rings I know are PC lids

How much water should I add to each cake per day? 1/5 cup?

If you are doing the first dunk and roll before fruiting, do you usually do a second one after the first flush?

For 4oz jars, 1/4 pint, yes.

The goal is to hydrate the cakes, you could dunk, pour water onto the cake, or mist.

I think simply pouring water onto the cake is best, and if you have too much water, simply invert the jar so water drains (turn upside down).

Soaking the cake is good though, so dunking probably hydrates the cake better.

I'd probably dunk for like 1 hour, because mycelium needs oxygen and even if people can dunk for 24 hours , I'd dunk in 1 hour incraments.

Dunk 1 hour, let it breath air for 20 minutes, dunk another hour etc.

Is it a problem if my cakes float when I try to dunk them? I rolled cakes a few times during the soaking to try and help with the diffusion, but does this mean I waited too long to birth the cakes or something?

(relative noob here)

I've heard some conflicting things vis a vis HC vs SGFC, but it seems like the main difference is that the SGFC has a much higher free air exchange (FAE) than the HC, while the HC has a variable FAE.

Although FAE is an essential part of generating the right fruiting conditions, it also dries out the substrate, meaning that an SGFC requires much more attention to work properly (and is less noob-friendly, as noobs won't have as good of an eye for when the SGFC needs to be misted). Additionally, the ability to easily vary FAE in an HC is something that even the pros can appreciate. Furthermore, HCs are much easier to build than SGFCs (you literally just pour some coir in a box).

However there is simply no way that an HC will ever be able to match the FAE of an SGFC. For P. cubensis this isn't too much of an issue, as the HC is already able to provide more than enough FAE, but if the ability to fruit a variety of species is important to you, the SGFC has a clear advantage. Additionally, the SGFC was the standard fruiting chamber for quite a while, so many seasoned pros prefer it simply because it's what they're used to.

So, basically, if you're a noob who only wants to fruit P. cubensis you're probably better off using an HC, but an SGFC is definitely still a viable option (even for noobs), it really comes down to personal preference.

Sorry if this is supposed to be posted elsewhere but I thought it wasn't worth starting a new thread cause of this.

I'm maybe overthinking about what type of jar I should get.
But please help me out here. I'm in Europe so American type jars are too expensive for me to order. The only ones I can afford that look ok for the job are these ones:

Someone wrote somewhere that when the jar is too big/long takes longer to colonize and the cake can dry out or develop contams. So these are a bit more than 1/2 pint. But maybe if I just fill these to 2 thirds with BRF/verm mix and the rest with just verm and maybe I'll be ok? Also these jars come with one piece metal lids, not the usual American 2 piece metal lids that I see for the Ball jars which are used a lot in this forum. Is this a problem?

question: is a fully colonized jar white all the way up to the collar, and completely white on the bottom?
question 2: if some jars fully colonize before others, do you wait a week and then birth them as they are ready and put them in the fruiting chamber? Or do you birth them all at the same time when they are all ready + 1 week?

Thank you for the detailed instructions.
