Hi everyone. This is my first post I have a bag of live mycelium from an online kit vendor but I didn't set my kit up right away... I talked to them, and they told me that is should of been refridgerated until use.. Anyways, theyr'e sending me a new bag, but I was wondering if I can use this bag for a small home made kit or something? It doesn't seem to have any green or yellow (the tell tale signs of it going bad - as I understand) Anyone have any ideas, or should I just toss it? Thanks

Hello and welcome! So what's wrong with the bag that it isn't at where it's supposed to be at? What is the substate? Is it bright, healthy mycelium growing? Give us some details and we'll be sure to help you out...

Hi mockeylock, I really appreciate your response..
The bag looks just like this:
with the exception of 3 very small spots that are black (about the size of a quarter)
and in a few small places theres yellow on the outside of the bag.. but only in a few small small spots, it almost looks like the yellow is on the bag, and not even touching the mycelium
thanks!

If you didn't innoculate it... go ahead. What do you have to lose.. Just flame sterilize the syringe... If it's like some kind of breakable patch.. Hit it up... If it came ready made,... put it in the dark at 86 F....
If it doesn't start showing signs of mycelium... dump it in a bucket with some peat moss,, verm,,, pasturized poo,,, whatever...
If it doesn't start to produce mycelium.... use the one the vendor is sending you.... I don''t get it...

It came innoculated as I understoon.. On the site it says: "Grow with mycelium instead of spores. Skip the entire innoculation process and get to the point with this easy to use mushroom kit."
Thanks for your suggestions nofind um

OK, if the black is any sort of growth it's probably a lost cause if you're looking for an easy grow. I would imagine it is mold or bacterial contamination because I don't know what else it would be. There are ways to isolate and grow out the mycelium but I think that's way more than you're trying to get yourself into if you're buying pre-innoculated bags. Did you see the spots show up? Are they getting larger?

It sounds like it is doing fine. The white is mycelia. The yellow is mycelial waste. But what is the white growing on? Grain? Corn? Rice? Vermiculite? Composte? Straw? Manure? The dark spots are uncolonized... just wait for it to start fruiting. Keep the other bag in the fridge until you want it to grow. But don't keep it in the fridge for much longer than one week. I think you may want to make a casing for that bag.
