Deaths from Vaping
    #26173725 -

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/06/cdc-reports-at-least-three-deaths-in-vaping-related-lung-disease-outbreak.html

4 people died from a 'mysterious' lung disease, apparently along the lines of what would constitute as 'respiratory distress syndrome" or viral pneumonia. Over 400 other cases of this disease have been reported, all through patients who used vape pens, including just THC oil pens. They have yet to pinpoint a specific source, but Vitamin E acetate is the ingredient they suspect the most.

What do you think this means? Just fear mongering? Or are the unknown risks of vaping that have been talked about since their conception finally starting to be revealed? Will you keep vaping after this? Or wait for more info?

Not to give anyone hypochondria, but for anyone who is an avid vaper, the symptoms are a general difficulty to breathe, shortness of breath, chest pain,  and less commonly nausea, fatigue, and fevers.

Freaky.

Something about that moist vapor. It seems like a bad idea to put moist vapor into your lungs over and over.

It could definitely be fear mongering, an attempt to put people back on cigs, which are more profitable for tobacco companies.

I wonder if salt nicotine vaporizing is safer. I would guess its slightly safer :strokebeard:

I would imagine that tobacco companies do not have that kind of control over media, especially not in comparison to the potential control that vape companies could have, who I imagine are more powerful in 2019. I would also argue that "big tobacco" never really had anywhere near the level of control of information as they were portrayed to have, and that idea mostly caught on as a semi-joke around the time that the health risk from cigs were becoming more well-known. Just because an entity can broadly benefit from something, does not mean that entity was part of an elaborate conspiracy to do so.

True.

Perhaps its just a coincidence. Its also a new trend and anything thats new will be in the news. Take foldable phones. A strange brand new technology. Just released in Korea but yet in the news. Same with vaping. New technology with questionable side effects. Its implied that vaping is dangerous while in comparsion, smoking seems safer. I mean, look at the Natives, they smoke from peace pipes, straight tobacco. It seems like a "safer" method cause its more natural.

Dont know how a news story about a relatively mundane tech innovation has any comparison to a news story about new health risks related to a commonly used product. Nor do I think this is indicative that "they" are trying to make vaping look worse than smoking cigarettes, something that has been vilified and demonized for years and has become a collapsing industry almost directly due to the media's portrayal of smoking. One news story about a couple deaths possibly related to vaping does not negate the medias coverage of the millions on millions of deaths from smoking every year, and the role news media played in the decimation of the tobacco industry.

Frankly i just dont think i understand what point youre trying to make

Although vaping with cartridges is relatively new with regard to smoking, it has still seen widespread use for several years now.  The sudden outbreak of similar fatal/non-fatal cases linked to vaping (and specifically linked to vaping a cannabis containing product) would seem to indicate a manufacturing problem involving some sort of contaminant not typically found in these products.  Whether it's Vitamin E acetate or something else, the takeaway here would seem to be that one who wishes to use these products could minimize their risk by only buying cartridges from companies that have a track record and openly discuss their production techniques and safeguards for purity.  This of course, is not a failsafe, as even companies with a good history have made terrible mistakes in the past.  But it does seem more likely to me that an unlicensed off-brand producer with looser quality control would be the higher probability culprit in a situation like this.

I don't get a chance to partake as often these days, but when I do (if I'm not eating a homemade brownie), I'm using a Utilian 721 convection heat vaporizer loaded up with my home grown flowers.  Apparently you can use the Utilian with various concentrates as well, however I haven't tried it because I don't really need anything stronger than what I use these days, nor do I have the time or interest to be creating my own concentrates at this point in my life.

Bottom line... Knowing your source is imperative. :spliff:

Im betting most of these cases were in the chronic/habitual use pattern.  A big difference between puffing on a vape a few hits to get high and inhaling something 50 or 100 times a day.

Like smoking a cigarette or two occasionally vs smoking 2 packs a day.

I've not heard anything about the sources / brands of cartridges people who have gotten sick were using. I've looked. It shouldn't be too hard if there is a trend, to see if there are certain brands that are contributing to most of the issues. Could it be random and not due to any particular brands? Again, it should not be tough to find out. Easier than tracking down the source of salmonella contamination, which we do routinely.

Yeah.  Never been into it but seeing what it does to some people in their teens I don't want to.  Seeing people in hospital beds going through hell, that is for old cig smokers that smoke a hell of a lolt.  Feel fine with plain tobacco ciggies once in awhile.  AMERICAN SPIRIT! Or roll your own. Watch the insider and learn.  Is better not to have all that shit in it and I think this is pretty much the same.  Farther one goes away from nature, more at risk.  I love what nature provides.

Something about it wasn't cancer for the youth but weird shit forming in their lungs from the chems in it.  To each their own though.  Won't touch the stuff.

Watched a news clip and was surprised to say the least seeing some that young in that bad of shape in hospitals.  Also had a guy ask me for the first time in my life if I had any chewing tobacco.  Kind of makes me laugh thinking about it with respect to him.

It can not be traced to certain brands/batches because this is not happening with products that are from the legal/regulated market, it is happening with the carts on the "street"/black market.

The issues are not occurring with cartridges that are "real", and I mean "real" as in cartridges that have actually been tested and are bought from a licensed weed store/distributor.

There is a huge amount of carts out there on the street/black market. They often come in packages that look legit, like as if they're the same product that is found in weed stores, sometimes they're even packaged in "brands" that are actually real brands found in legal states, but they are totally counterfeit/fake (as in not from a legal state, not from an actual weed store/distributor, not tested for pesticides or contaminants, etc...)...Anyone can purchase the packaging online, anyone can buy cheap empty "carts" online/from china, and then fill those carts with what ever they want.

The issues range from high concentrations of pesticides being found in the carts (if the herb is grown with pesticides, some of them will become more concentrated in extracts)....

...To "thinning agents" like vitamin-E being used and other substances that should not be vaped/inhaled.

....To synthetic cannabinoids being put into the carts (even a shroomery member said the carts he was getting contained synth-noids, he ended up having an intense reaction/overdose from the stuff, even the dude he got them off of told him they contained synth-noids)

To lead and other toxic/contaminated metals being used on the carts/coils

There is potential for all sorts of garbage to end up in carts....I absolutely do not trust any cart/pen that is sold on the street/black market, even if they're packaged in "legit" packaging and even if they have the "test results" printed on the label...Any packaging can be ordered online and those "test results" can be totally false/fake.

Cartridges bought from licensed weed stores/distributors are not an issue though. They are actually tested for all sorts of contaminants.

Long long before this started to happen, like several years ago when "carts" started to become a thing in the legal markets/states...Long ago I had a feeling this exact situation was going to happen on the "street market" with these carts...I totally saw this coming ,crystal clearly, years ago....I knew it wouldn't be long before synthetic cannabinoids were being put into them, and I knew it wouldn't be long before unsafe materials were being used, I knew it wouldn't be long before health issues started to arise from "vaping" pens/carts.

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued a health alert on August 9
regarding a cluster of previously healthy adults with severe acute pulmonary disease
who required hospitalization and respiratory support in a hospital in Kings County, CA.
These cases, all identified since June 2019, appear to be related to vaping cannabis or
cannabidiol (CBD) oils. At this time, no infectious etiology has been determined. Similar
clusters among teens and young adults are being investigated in Wisconsin and Illinois.
CDPH is working with the Centers for Disease Control to identify if there are common
factors

Since June 2019, at least 7 cases of severe acute pulmonary disease in previously
healthy adults were reported from a Kings County hospital. Cases were among
residents of multiple counties. The patients presented with progressive respiratory
distress, sometimes initially diagnosed with pneumonia or bronchitis, and some with
preceding fevers and gastrointestinal symptoms. All cases failed to respond to an initial
course of antibiotic treatment. All patients required admission to the hospital with
significant respiratory support, including high-flow oxygen, bilevel positive airway
pressure (BIPAP), or intubation with mechanical ventilation. Diagnoses included
pneumonitis and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Patients have improve with systemic steroids. Evaluation for infectious etiologies has been negative to date in
all patients.

an 18-year-old male patient showed up to NYU Winthrop Hospital in Long Island complaining about chest pain, nausea, fever, and shortness of breath. Initially, doctors thought he had pneumonia, due to his X-rays showing “haziness” in the lungs. Within 48 hours, says Melodi Pirzada, chief of pediatric pulmonology at the hospital, the patient’s condition worsened and he was sent to the ICU. There he was diagnosed with ARDS, a condition associated with acute lung injury. He was connected to a breathing tube and placed in a medically induced coma for one week.

The doctors were baffled as to how a healthy 18-year-old could become so sick, until the patient’s mother showed up at the hospital with something she’d dug up from her son’s wastebasket. It was a vaporizer cartridge with the label TKO Extracts, a licensed company based in California that sells THC products; the cartridge was later confirmed to be a counterfeit version of the company’s product, Pirzada says.......

........Just one day later, a second patient showed up with completely different symptoms, including various nodules in the lungs; the 19-year-old suffered from coughing and chest pain, and had lost so much weight in the span of just two weeks that doctors initially suspected he had cancer. When a biopsy ruled that out, the patient said that he too had been using THC cartridges for the past three months, all of which had been purchased on the black market........

.....according to a spokesperson from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). On August 12th, the CDPH released a health alert regarding a “cluster” of at least seven healthy adults in Kings County, California, all of whom had been admitted to hospitals between July and August 2019, and all of whom had presented with symptoms of severe acute pulmonary disease, including coughing and shortness of breath, and in some cases fever and vomiting. All seven of these cases — including an additional one reported following media coverage of the initial press release — were linked to THC vapes that had been purchased off the black market....

.....some common contaminants, according to the lab tests DankbustersOfficial has conducted alongside third-party cannabis testing company BelLabs, include pesticides like myclobutanil, a fungicide that, when vaporized, converts into hydrogen cyanide, a substance that is extremely toxic when inhaled and was used as a chemical weapon by the French army during World War I. There are also concerns that “heavy metals, such as lead, from the cartridge and its heating coils may also contaminate the products....

....Lab testing of Pirzada’s patient’s cartridge revealed that it tested positive for not just THC, but also vitamin E. If inhaled, oils like Vitamin E can cause lipoid pneumonitis, a rare condition that results from fat particles being inhaled into the lungs, says Pirzada. When she submitted the results to the Department of Health, it informed her that there were two other cases of THC cartridges testing positive for vitamin E oil.

One of the main issues I have with vaping is that very few of these chemicals have ever been studied for their inhalation safety. Just because something has been deemed food safe or safe for human consumption doesn’t necessarily translate into safe for inhalation. We have NO IDEA what effects long term, high concentration use of things like glycerol or PEG (or the myriad of compounds used for flavorings) may have on the lungs.

The use of glycerol seems very risky to me since it decomposes into very toxic compounds at temperatures not too much higher than vaping temps

I use a nicotine vape and have done for years. I make my own unflavored juice from lab grade ingredients and use a low powered device. I caught on very quickly that additives/flavourings and high temp vaping were bad news. I hear about the untested long term effects of vaping, but against the confirmed long term effects of smoking it's a simple choice for me.

I'm pretty sure there's a million things you could put in a vape that would make it deadly, just like there's a million things you could roll in a cigarette paper and light up that would do you wrong too.

It's like there is an established safety profile with vaping that people seem to think carries on no matter what they put in their vapes. Critical thinking skills are not a strong point with many people these days.

I vaped for a while in 2014-2015 but quit because I would experience strange lung pain at random times.
Def should of been more selective about where and the type of vape juice I got. I just kinda wrongly assumed if I'm buying professional looking bottles from a vape shop there would be some quality control.

The point i was trying to make ia the media loves acare tactics. If any new technology/trend has some kind of scary issue, it will show up in the news. Another example is when that self-driving car killed someone in Arizona.

Its the trend of mass stream news to scare people or to show the dangerous side of new technologies. I mean why wouldnt they, its both interesting and time-relevent.

You tend to make extremely speculative assessments about why your weed tastes funny or makes you feel strange.

I’m assuming that most thc extraction methods use something like butane or other aliphatic hydrocarbons.

Myclobutanil is not soluble in those solvents
Quote:
Soluble in common organic solvents, e.g. ketones, esters, alcohols and aromatic hydrocarbons, all 50 to 100 g/L. Insoluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons.
