Build is nearly done and before the final stick down and silicon seal im going to test it to make sure the flow works.  One stupid question which seems ridiculous.  The hepa filter has a plastic seal on one side and a metal frame on the other like in the picture.  The question is, does it matter which way the air flows through and would it be the seal side to the frame side or vice versa

That’s how mine was seal one side and no arrow for direction of airflow. My thinking was seal would be airflow in side if any. That’s the way I wanted the seal anyway so that’s the way it went lol.
I didn’t even silicone mine in as it is tight enough fit that it doesn’t move.

Banging stuff.  I was thinking the same thing.  Once I glue the sides and holds I wil silicon the edges to make sure there are no gaps.  The filter will be held into place with some beading for easy access.

Yeah that’s how I was going to hold mine in with some 15mm strip but when I realised it held in place fine without it I thought fuck it I’m gonna make removable hatch instead.

My filter was rubber seal out and trim wood molding over the seal.

The direction the filter faces is critical. There should be an arrow on it somewhere showing you the direction of the airflow.

If it only has the protective grill on one side then I'd call that the front.

My filter was definitely seal on the outflow side.  It did have an arrow though.

Man you are going to love it!!

Micielio you are mistaken in thinking this filter has 3x the resistance itno ly has 0.5 not 1.2 which is usual.

I don’t have the brainpower rn to do the conversions on that chart. I’m honestly not sure how I figured the other one out as easily as I did.

The one I bought had a seal on the inside, is there protective grate on both sides?

I do appreciate you correcting me. That's how we learn.

What I said earlier is:
A 11.8 inch thick room filter has half the resistance of a 5.8 inch laminar flow filter.
A three inch filter has twice the resistance of the 5.8 inch laminar flow filter...

The thicker the filter the less resistance because there's more filter area for greater flow..

There's a reason why Fungi Perfecti uses a 5.8 inch thick laminar flow filters, also a blower to get proper static pressure, and not a fan for their laminar flow hoods that they supply..

Im gunna call the filter guys tomorrow to get the right advice and then its going to testing stations

Then the final stick down and seal and hopefully im cooking on gas!!!!

Because we want laminar flow.

Thicker filters usually have lower resistance. (Because there's more surface area of filter material in the same flat surface area at the front.)

Thicker ones are made for scrubbing air but not laminar flow(think hospital HVAC)

1 inch initial resistance usually ends up being about 2" by the end of the life of the hepa. You want a blower that can handle the increased resistance over time.

At 1" w.g. we get into filters that will develop laminar flow when the right blower is attached.

The "evidence" is that 0.5" filters don't necessarily produce laminar flow when tested with an smoke wand.

I think you are right to a certain extent but for the amateur mycologist as long as the sterile air is strong enough im sure we will be good to go.

I'm sure too... Work right in front of the filter you should be fine..

I did a smoke test one time on a non-laminar flow. A vortex develop and drew the smoke into my work area in front of the hepa filter. It made me a believer..

Stupid question, but...what kind of smoke is good to use for a smoke test? I know my FH is good, but I've always wanted to see how the clean bubble of air actually looks in front of it. Would a big bong hit produce good smoke to visualize it? Cigarettes not an option.

This would be true if all three filters were the same media type, but often the thinner filters are a different style of filter media

The thicker the filter the less resistance because there's more filter area for greater flow..

There's a reason why Fungi Perfecti uses a 5.8 inch thick laminar flow filters, also a blower to get proper static pressure, and not a fan for their laminar flow hoods that they supply..
FP uses 5.8 filters because its works that they can get cheaply and many of their filter fan combos are overpowered IMO.

Commercial Fan Filter Units rely on baffles to produce even flow but the filters they use are lower W. G. Than the 5.8, they will work great for producing laminar flow with smaller fans that the home built ones. Usually commercial flow hoods are just FFU’s with a metal and glass enclosure, and they blow ~75-100fps

@ Edmunter, if you already got the fan and filter math done I think it will work great, and props on you for building a non traditional style. Make sure you keep fresh prefioters on hand though because the thinner filters can clog up faster since they have less overall surface area.
