Laminar flow hood blower

Would this work if I found right size filter? I don't want it to big ya know.

You might be able to make a small one like 12x24 depending on the water gage of the filter and the CFM your blower puts out.

Look up the specs online for a resistance to output chart. If it can blow at least
200cfm at 1.2" sp then it would work for a 1x2 hood; 400cfm at 1.2" sp for a 2x2;
And 600cfm for a 2x3. Seeing as it's a 1/10 hp motor I'd think it would work for
a 1x2 or possibly a 2x2

I think that bad boy is too small.  I found a partial list of its CFM output at various resistances.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dayton-Blower-Motor-Model-2C917B-1-10-HP-230-VAC-1550-RPM/253956256783

It shows that at .8"wc you're getting 180CFM.  By the time you get to 1.2"wc, it's  going to be a lot less.  Like maybe 100CFM.

That would work for a 1sq foot filter.  You can't work with that.

I suppose if you really want to be efficient you could do some calculations and get a second blower to have a twin engine hood.

I just picked up a blower for $55 on ebay shipped http://www.fantech.net/enca/home/Products/fans--accessories/circular-duct-fans/circular-duct-fans-with-ac-motors/fg/fg-6xl-centrif-inline-fan/

and a 12x24x3 HEPA replacement filter for a name brand flowhood for $85 shipped.

Sheet of Plywood, prefilter for about $30 and I had a switch and cord already in my garage as well as paint/primer.

What I learned is that you need to make sure the fan you purchase can flow 100CFM per square foot at the specified resistance of the HEPA filter too much flow can be as bad as not enough. My advice would be to find a fan that will get you about 125/150CFM at 1.1-1.2 (Per square foot of filter) if you use a prefilter (Which I recommend if you want to extend the life of the HEPA) Mine flows 225CFM @ 1.0 inwg which is plenty because my HEPA has a pressure drop of .8 and my prefilter has a pressure drop of .18inwg

Hope this helps, it can be daunting finding the right filter/fan combo. For me I wanted to shop around and get the best deal on both so it took me a week of frustration but I am happy with the saturday it took to build and the $170 wallet hit.

Good luck!

Surprising I would have thought a 1/10 hp motor would blow harder but I guess
not.

Ya 180cfm isnt really good for any thing hood related unless you wanna do 1 jar at a time:lol:

Yeah I will say the hardest part about designing my flow hoow was the blower selection at first I thought it was all about CFM, but the resistance of the filter is what creates the laminar flow but puts a lot of strain on the blower. I am glad I used this site to dig in and do my research before building mine.

This is the first full week of using the flow hood and I have to say wow its to much better than using my glove box.

The best way Is find the size filter you need and then match a blower to your filter.

1/10 hp is pretty small.
230 volts you'll need.

For a 24x24x5.8 inch filter, this is the size blower you'll need:

Dayton 1TDU2  https://www.grainger.com/product/DAYTON-Rectangular-Permanent-Split-1TDU2
For laminar flow....

24x24x8.5 filter:  https://fungi.com/collections/laboratory-equipment/products/24-x-24-x-5-8-micron-filter

The 1tdu2 is pretty overkill for anything under a 2'x3' even though FP recommends
it as a universal blower.

Yes, your right.. It's slightly over..
I would rather be over than borderline or under.
I choke my intake down a  little and find it to be perfect.
As the filter gets older It could lose a little of Its air flow, no problem just readjust the choke for more flow.

When I built my unit I went with the 1tdu2. The next Dayton down in size was too borderline for my liking, considering the pre-filter and Its restriction when It starts to load up with dust particles.

Definitely I just imagine that op wanted something on the smaller side based on
the op.

It would probably be worth it though if they ever want to upgrade later

I was hoping The op would look at the specs. of his blower and compare the specs. of a blower that's compatible with a 24x24x5.8 and decide what size filter he would need for his blower.

When he sees his 1.5 amp blower compared to a 7.3 amp 1tdu2 blower and he wants laminar flow. Well I would say It time to scrap that idea of using his blower.
Also would his blower produce 0.8 to 1.1 sp. for laminar flow?

That's the big one! It is specifically what caused me so much heartache with building my flowhood.

You need to know the specs. on the filter that your planning on using before you can match up a blower.

Its good to know the specs on your blower and filter.  But, if you dont know, you can still get it to work as long as your blower isn't too small.  You can always reduce the output of an AC blower with a variable frequency drive, or by constricting the intake or output with tape or something.

Basically, you want the air coming out of the filter to smoothly blow a lighter's flame over 45-90 degrees when you hold it near the filter's face.

That 3 speed blower posted above looks like it should be plenty strong enough, but you should really see if you can find the specs regarding how it preforms under resistance to be sure.

If your looking for laminar flow is the question..

Some blowers will deliver the cfm. but will not deliver the static pressure. For laminar flow you need a blower that delivers from .8 up to 1.1 sp.

If you don't have adequate pressure in the plenum you'll end up with uneven velocity from your filter (turbulence)...
Turbulence will draw contaminates into your workspace..

Here's a cool vid on laminar flow:

I think there is some confusion.  Static pressure is not a function of the blower, but of what it is blowing through.  It's the resistance to the flow of air, analogous to ohms in electricity.  A blower does not 'deliver static pressure', rather, it overcomes it.  Maybe that's what you meant.

And that bit about the CFMs.  You cannot have the CFMs delivered without flow.  As in, you can not have a blower putting out the right CFMs but not overcoming the static pressure.  In a 2x2 filter, (4sq feet), you need to have 400 CFM coming through there to have the ideal 100 feet per minute air speed.

Maybe you mean the CFM output of the blower will drop considerably when attached to a HEPA, which is true.  A single CFM rating is usually the rating of the blower when it is just sitting there, plugged in, not blowing through any ducts or plenums or anything.  That's the unloaded CFM rating.

There are graphs showing the CFM for various resistances.

This subject is often a little confusing, with nomenclature that can be a little hard to get used to.

Maybe Im the one who's got it wrong here.

This is the same blower that Fungi Perfecti has on their 24x24x5.8 inch..

scroll down and check out the specs. cfm. sp.(static pressure)

Those specs dont actually get to 1.2 inch water column, but at .8 inch wc, it's a whopping 1040 CFM.  And the CFM numbers are not dropping off rapidly by that point, as they do when it's approaching it's limit.

That blower is overkill.  It's certainly powerful enough for a flow hood.

You want one a little over powered anyways to get a bit more life out of your filter as it fills up with particulate and it's resistance increases.

From the search engine, Roger Rabbit says:

Hepa filters are cheap. I've seen them for $20 and for the most part, they're worthless. What you want for successful mycology is a laminar flow hepa filter. Without laminar flow, you're just swirling the air around, which will pick up contaminants and blow them into your work. By working in front of a laminar air stream, the air, thus contaminants, leave the area of your work, flowing back towards you and away from the sterile media.
RR https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7534767#7534767

If you don't have laminar flow you can work up close to the filter and be in a safe zone.. That's my opinion..
I have done smoke test experiments with a none laminar flow and watch the vortex draw the smoke right into the work area.. It'll make a believer out of you..
