cold shock? casings won't pin.
    #2616237 - 04/29/04 02:57 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

My foaf has four casings going, and even though the temp, air exchange, and light are good they just won't pin. (It's been more than a week now.) A couple of them he waited too long to stick in the fruiting chamber and now have some pretty grim overlay.

His general plan is to deep-scratch the ones that need it and then cold-shock, but he doesn't really know how to do that. They probably won't all fit in his fridge. Would it make any sense to throw some ice in the fruiting chamber? Or if he puts them in the fridge one at a time, how long do they need to stay in there?

Ah ha! My foaf just had another look an hour ago and there's lots of pinheads. I knew that if I just bitched about those casings on shroomery, they'd figure out something was up and do the right thing.

Interestingly enough, the temp in the fruiting chamber is over 80 today. Coincidence?

Yeah, wait it out. Delays like this come from not introducing fruiting conditions in sync with correct casing colonization. I wouldn't recommend cold shocking P. Cubensis at all.

From personal experience, cold shocking doesn't benefit a cubensis grow.

many people tend to stress about overlay on their first few casings.
if you're seeing a lot of mycelium on the surface of the casing, and as long as it is fluffy looking, (you might even see spikes)this just means you have nice aggressive mycelium, and hypal knots, and pins are on the way.

many people get overlay on their casing because their casing layer was too thick and exposed in damp air and heat in their incubator for too long.
