For me it helps to not have direct access to them. Way easier to resist going for a 10 minute ride to the coffee-shop than resisting a nice blob of concentrate sitting on a top shelf in the living room

CREATE WORTHWHILE LIFE EVENTS THAT REQUIRE YOU TO BE SOBER.


Don't try to resist an urge, instead use that effort to start a new habit that is more healthy and life affirming.


For me its swimming.


If 365lbs me can hop on a bike, to the pool and there do epic splash dives loud like in Sea World, then pick up groceries on the bike ride back, you for certain havo no excuse to not engage life in a way that particularly defies your fears and therefore gives you glory.

I was body dysphoric for being obese (hard to say its in the eye of the beholder when you have a pound for every day of the year) I had severe social phobia with traumatic origins, I was so out of shape I had to train a stationary bike to even get there - BUT I WENT.

You're not 365 lbs - whats weighting you down from having epic fun without drugs?

Run 3 miles every single day before you eat your first meal for the day. That will help regulate a lot of hormonal stuff  that causes anxiety, depression and obsessive compulsion and ease your transition into relative sobriety.

Replace bad destructive habits with ones that support healthy life, your recovery and your growth as human being as Asante said.

For me example yoga does the trick very well.
Best high I have found as a bonus!

Dont concentrate your energy on resisting but building new.
Baby steps brother, you can do this!
Healthy diet, excercise for body and mind, enough rest.
And meaningful doing for your time are keys in this IMHO.

It's gonna be afternoon before I drag my cookie dough ass around for 3 miles. Dinner's gonna be my first and only meal, hahaha! cool advice though, I like the straightforwardness of it

And realise that once you've created, and are maintaining those worthwhile events, if you stop being sober/clean they go out the window and you're back to square one.

All the work you put in, all the fun you had and all the rewards you're yet to reap. Gone. This is something that helps me immensly whenever I get "the urge"

Have a diversion, like a vacation. For example, if you throw away all your drugs, then go on vacation for a couple of days or a week. That helps a lot with getting over the initial difficulties.

Then when you get home, the key is to distract yourself with entertainment. Stay busy, do anything and everything that's fun and don't stop.

I also recommend throwing away all your drugs if you're really serious about it.
