Are my grain jars suffering from the Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde syndrome?

Two weeks after inoculation with agar based mycelium (Dr Jekyll):



After shaking (Mr Hyde):



How come the seemingly fully colonized grain looks surprisingly uncolonized after shaking? Is that normal?

Actually I didn't even intend to shake this one before spawning. But there was one grain jar colonizing slower than the others. It was (judging from outside about 80% colonized). So, I decided to mix it up a little. To my surprise the result looked like the Mr Hyde above. I thought the mixed up jar would look significantly whiter. So, I got curious and tried some of the other jars finally even giving my top performer a good shake - the one on the pictures.

How long after shaking is the recovery pic? Probably bacterial unfortunately.

About 30 seconds.

They all look(ed) pretty healthy from outside. Nice mycel growth.

Normal. We talk about recovery alot which means the amountnof time it takes to start growing fuzz again, healthy jars take 24-48 hours. Any longer and hidden contaminants are most likely present

But where did the mycel go? :crazy:

Would a fully colonized grain jar also exhibit this appearance after shaking? Or does this mean that the jar was only seemingly fully colonized?

My assumption is that after a jar is completely white and I give it another two or three days to be on the safe side - then I can assume that it is fully colonized and ready for spawning.

Its there you just smashed it all up when you shook it.

It will re-emerge from the grain in 24-48 hours. If it doesnt its contaminated.

Give it 24-48hr and it will either be fully colonized or not. If not, then yea it is contaminated. It should probably be fine, I had originally assumed it had been longer than 0hr.

Yeah, first shake to last shake it damn near completely disappears. Not as much when you shake before you Spawn but still fucks with ya

I was reading around and it seems that currently recommended protocol is to only shake after inoculation and then once right before spawning.

But it seems to me that shaking after about 60% colonization is a good idea for two reasons:

  • it speeds up full colonization for many jars
  • it helps identify contamination by exacerbating and distributing its impact and making it more visible
