Stones! Experimenting with sclerotia cultures for best results, * 1
    #26156506 - 08/28/19 07:21 AM (1 year, 22 days ago)

This thread is to gather info so I can make a concise journal account of my experience with sclerotia making species.

I would like to G2G some more stone jars,  The ones im thinking of have small stone formations already.  What is your experience with this and how late can you go, what is optimum timings ect?

Im trying to fill up all those old household jars I used to use when I first started before I went Kilner.

No problems G2G jars with stone formations. As for optimal timing, I would say before the stones get too big and clog the mouth of your jar when trying to pour into receivers. If the stones get too big, they’ll make it clumsier to pour.

Are you doing this to grow more stones?  If so, I’d recommend spawning to a tub and keeping it moist...tubs crank out stones and you’ll get fruit as well.  Also, it helps to clone a stone to get a culture that is more stone prolific.

Just my :twocents:

Cool, what kind tub?  Do you go mono?

I’d spawn a mono with coir. Stones grow like crazy after spawning

Any kind, really...they just tend to produce better in bulk sub, which is what I should have said.

Perhaps I will spawn my pints with stones as well then.:takingnotes::popcorn: OP keep us updated on your progress. If one were to spawn a monotub, how full would be practical to fill it with coir? Bigger sub, bigger stones?

So you can fruit until they run out of steam or contaminate and the harvest the stones.  Thats amazing.

What kind of ratios do people feel is optimum?  I might do them in kinda shoe boxes in monos to up my chances of cleaner flushes.

I think most people are finding this when spawning for fruit, so anywhere from 1:1 to 1:3 spawn:sub ratios.  I don’t know that anyone has actually tested the ratios so might make for a cool project for those so inclined.

Have you seen data regarding what harvests people are getting per quart jars verses quarts per mono tub?

Nope.  Just based on personal experience as well as what’s been posted, subs seem to be much more productive than spawn.

And what size monos have you done?

A variety, but the size of tub is irrelevant as long as you can provide optimal conditions.  I would say it’s the ratio that should be looked at.  I usually run 1:1 but that’s why I said it would be good to run some comparisons to see which ratio works best.

I would add that stones in sub tend to form toward the surface, so a larger surface area with less depth would likely be beneficial....so, in contrast to my above statement, size of tub could play an important role as well.

Ahh ok!

A Shallower sub will be easier to monitor.  Im going to expand 1 jar to 8 more and try to make a couple of tubs with that.  I will play about with ratios then.  I use nice sized shoe boxes that will be the bases of a 1:1 v 1:2, v 1:3.  That will leave me 2 jars to expand.

So this is one of my jars that has raced ahead.  What do you reccon I should do with this........

Whatever you decide to do with it, I’d recommend cloning the big stone.  Just snap in half and excise some inner tissue.

Just to offer my opinion about spawning to a tub or a leaving in the jar. I personally would rather eat stones surrounded by grain than stones pulled out of coir or similar. You can also remove stones from the grain and spawn the remaining grain to tubs accomplishing the same thing without including the stones you already grew. When I did stones the yield per jar was more than enough for my needs without feeling the need to slightly increase it by mixing with a dirty sub. Just my opinion.

I only use coir as a substrate which isnt really that dirty.

Ive spawned it to a 1:2 ratio stones and all.

One question, can you just put the substrate str8 into fruiting conditions like with cubensis when colonising?  Whats do you do, fruit once then harvest stones and all?

I let them colonize and then case and fruit.  Harvest flushes until it contaminates or stops producing fruit and then harvest stones.
