I am wanting to try my hand at Lion's Mane. So who has the best spawn? I only want commercial spawn from Amycel, Aloha Medicinals or North Spore. Or the like. I want good quality spawn. So I am turning to you my fellow mushroomer. Please Let me know what you all think I should buy. Anyone wanting to trade for a good Petri Dish of Lion's Mane. I have the following...
Amycel 3015 oyster Aloha Medicinals yellow oyster Aloha Medicinals pink oyster Aloha Medicinals Elma (pearl oyster)

Out of curiosity, why buy spawn instead of a petri or some other culture medium? The mycellium you will be getting will just be that much older (higher 'p-value'), no?

The reason I want spawn is because of the price difference. If I buy from a place like Aloha Medicinals, Amycel or North spore. The spawn will not be old. I can take that spawn and make a master slant and some Petri dishes. A master culture (Petri dish) from Amycel is a couple of hundred dollars. I also can start growing immediately and not have to wait for the spawn to colonize from a Petri dish.

Ah, I didn't realize spawn from these places was so much cheaper. Well, the guys at my market use North Spore. Their Lion's Mane looked good, but that's all I can say. I just bought some and tried cloning it to agar.
How much better are these commercial strains vs something you could selectively cultivate yourself via spores? I'm asking because I've thought about buying some too.

Aloha, Amycel and North Spore. Have done most of the work for you and have narrowed it down to proven good fruiters. Why buy a syringe, Petri or spawn from someone that just throwes some mushroom mycelium on a plate and hopes for the best.

They are much better. I would rather pay an extra $20 and save a lot of work. In this case, it is true you get what you pay for.
But if could clone from a good fruit that would be good too. But again it comes down to time and the work. if I order oyster spawn today. In a month I can have fruit. A week to get the spawn. 2 weeks to colonize the sub (actually about 10 days for me) and a week in the fruiting chamber. Then off to restaurants they go.
I take the spawn and make masters and never have to order again.

Seems reasonable. Too bad those cultures are so pricey, I'd rather just order those everytime.
So to be clear you order spawn and clone a fruit, and that clone on agar is your new master? It's still fresh enough to where senescence isn't an issue for most species?

I take a single grain and put it on agar. I do about 10 dishes. I let that grow out and then make a master slant from the agar dish. That way if something unexpected happens I always have my master slant to go back to.
I then use the rest of the spawn to colonize some bags and get my first flush really quick.
The cultures are so pricey because you own it for life and if you need another one they ship it to you for the price to ship. It only makes sense if you have a large farm. But I could see the benefit if you do.

Commercial strains would be better on agar Imo. I feel with grain you only have that one shot.

I don't understand what you are saying or who you are talking to. But if you buy a spawn bag. That spawn bag has thousands of grains to transfer to agar. So when you buy grain you actually have thousands of chances, not one. I may be missing what you are saying. Sorry if this is the case.
