Are Foldable phones the Future?
    #26146889 -

Over the past couple months, Ive seen news stories about the coming of foldable cell phones. Heres the latest article I found: https://bgr.com/2019/08/21/motorola-razr-foldable-vs-galaxy-fold-vs-mate-x-launch-set-for-2019/

Both Motorola and Samsung are planning on releasing foldable phones this year.

How do u feel about foldable phones? Just a gimmick? Cool technology? Weird technology? Is this the next-gen of portable phones?

just a gimmick in my opinion. just another "hey look, its something new!" but doesnt at all advance the use of your cell phone.

it can go two ways:

1. fizzle out and become history

2. every new phone will be foldable

Yes, the flip phone. This is different thou. The actual screen folds. No phones today have physical keyboards (sadly).

To be fair, physical keyboards were way slower than touchscreen keyboards.

No real opinion on the fold-able screens. Can't really think of a solid use for one, it doesn't exactly reduce pocket bulk or anything.

Definitely. One of the main issues. Will they physical last all the folding? Time will tell....

Personally i like the physical ones cause i could type easier on them. But i guess ive gotten used to touchscreen typing. Perhaps u can have larger screens now since its foldable?

I like the slide out style phones and the flip phones because when the phone is closed your screen is protected.

I miss my LG rumor touch phone.

These new ones you linked seem neat

I just realized one huge advantage to foldable phones: Screen protection. Since the touchscreen phones fold in half, it gives them excellent screen protection. So if dropped your phone, the screen is protected. Plus foldable screens gotta be shatter-proof due to the folding-technology. No more shattered screens.

No. Even if the technology was perfect (which it isn't), a phone is a phone, not something else. It's trying to turn a phone into something it doesn't want to be. The beauty of modern cell phones compared to old cell phones is not how many features they have, but how simple they are. They're a single small piece of glass with images on it that you carry around with you in your pocket.

If you increase the size or complexity beyond a certain point it goes against the purpose of a phone. I think in the long run, phones will get simpler rather than more complex, and beyond a certain point they won't get any larger.

The screens on foldable phones are plastic and scratch super easy. Like, in a way most people would be surprised after using Gorilla Glass for years and years. And these phones are expensive. Put it in your pocket with just about anything metallic and you can kiss any benefits from extra screen real estate goodbye.

Some of them are going to be (or already are?) designed where you don’t have to open it it to use it but if you want to you can and have two monitors at once so maybe you could mess around on the Shroomery on one screen and watch a baseball game on the other without having to jump from one to the other or have a one bigger monitor for videos and pictures.

The main premise though, never. The concept of transferring a soul to something else will never happen. There's this show on Netflix called Altered Carbon that has a similar premise that was super interesting. I really like thinking about it, but we have a LOOOONG way to go in understanding our minds to transfer consciousness into something else

The perfection of the mapping required, assuming there isn't another aspect that we don't know about (which I believe there is), would be astronomical. It's more than just scanning neurons, even the tiniest difference in thickness of two connections could be the difference between being yourself and being a rage monster, or an addict, or forget important parts of your life.

In comparison, every other organ is a joke to create. Just meat and electricity

I think phones are perfect the way they are. A fruit rollup phone seems amusing but then you've gotta deal with plastic. It will be a long ass time before alternative methods of display offer the same visual fidelity and durability as what we have now. They could make them a bit thinner though, and make it so microphones, cameras, and that payment shit(NSF?) can be physically disabled. A little toggle  button that goes back and forth.
