So I learned a lot since this intial post. Mushrooms are asexual. They dont have a defined "gender" it's just when a spore cell is by itself it splits and starts prpducing hyphal cells (long chittinous cells) that reproduce using that initial code, these are monokaryotic hyphae i.e. a monoculture that never fruits. But the second another spore is introduced (which is pretty much sure to happen the second spores are distributed onto a surface) the cells become dikaryotic with 2 nuclei per cell and that genetic code is fused. So hence varieties of cubensis.
