Fucking bag tax!!!
    #26144925 - 08/20/19 04:00 PM (4 years, 7 months ago)

I'm pretty sure this is just a CT thing
but I'd be interested to know if other states are doing this fuckery
:mallow:
to cut down on plastic CT is doing away with plastic bags
so now stores are either not offering bags or charging you for them

so today I decided to pick up tacos for the family
and now I have to carry food and drinks for a family of 4 without a bag

who decided this was a good idea
:boxxy:

pretty sure that started around 2009 or 2010 in Montréal
and is increasingly commonplace practice of stores here in Manitoba

have been wearing a backpack and carrying cloth bags for shopping since before that tho
simply less of a hassle to carry than the weight of plastic bags cutting into my hands and arms

We've had it in the UK for years. 5p a small bag or 20p a big one. Idk if it has cut down the amount of bags going to landfill or wherever I spose it's not much cost really.

I pay 7 cents for a paper bag at Aldi.

Not sure but it seems I'm gonna need to start buying trash bags.  We all have a space for plastic bags and paper bags.  I use plastic bags from stores for a trash bag.

I actually have a few but they are in my wife's car for grocery shopping
this tax only started on 08/01 so I'm not used to it yet
even when we have the bags with us we forget to bring them into stores
but I had no idea that the UK and Canada had been doing it

$0.10 per bag
that adds up
and like 50% of the stores just decided that its too much effort
and got rid of bags altogether

if you're spending $200 on a grocery bill, you should be able to afford $1-$2 for some shopping bags. i dont see the big deal. theyre trying to reduce the amount of waste.

It is pretty pathetic when adults need disposable bags for convenience because they cant remember to bring their own boxes or bags. Even if your groceries took 20 bags that's $2. The Doritos in one of the bags cost more. And 20 bags worth of shit is a big bill unless you're buying dried beans and rice.

Germany made you pay for bags at least as far back as 2009

The very first grocery stores to have bags, to encourage bigger purchases, charged for them. A nickel. Then they became free as a marketing strategy to compete with other stores.

to my comprehension, Montréal invoked a total ban on thin plastic bags in 2018, so they may not even have the option of buying bags anymore
apparently the charges for bags started there in 2007

Quote:

As the ban on thin plastic bags came into effect in earnest Tuesday in Montreal, environmentalists hailed the move as an important first step in the fight against a global scourge.

Tuesday was also World Environment Day, and the United Nations issued a report describing plastic as one of the greatest threats to the planet, with 8 million tonnes of plastic waste ending up in the world’s oceans each year.

At the same time, some Montreal shopkeepers protested against what they called draconian regulations. Shopkeepers and corporations found violating the ban face fines ranging from $200 to as high as $4,000 for repeat offences

“We are all human, we want what’s best for the planet,” said Tunc, the manager of a downtown dépanneur who asked that his last name not be used.

He has been warning his regular customers for three months that he would have to start charging 10 or 15 cents for thicker plastic bags, depending on the size. But many of his clients are tourists who don’t carry bags with them, he noted. City inspectors had already visited with directives, warning him of the fines.

“For a little store, it’s tough for me,” he said. “A $4,000 fine? That’s crazy.”

He used to pay $18 for 1,000 thin plastic bags. Now he pays $65 for 1,000 of the thicker ones, offset by the charge to customers that he is obligated to include.

Montreal announced it would become the largest municipality in Canada to ban thin plastic bags in 2016. It took nearly two years to enforce the ban to give store owners the time to deplete their stock of thin bags the city says take years to degrade in landfills and float into waterways. Recycling rates for plastic bags are poor, the city says. Thicker plastic bags are still allowed on the reasoning that they can be reused up to 150 times. The city has intimated it could one day adopt a total ban of plastic bags.

Environmental groups applauded, but had their reservations about how often the thicker bags will be reused. Some grocery stores have reported customers are using just as many of the thicker bags as they did the thin ones.

Quote:

Charging more than 10 to 15 cents per bag and thus adopting the “user pays” principle that has proven effective in other areas would help change behaviour, Octeau said. The first time grocery stores started charging for bags back in 2007, their usage dropped by 50 per cent, city officials say.

Marc Robitaille of the Canadian Plastics Industry Association said studies have shown that 77 per cent of plastic bags are reused, primarily as garbage bags and the rest are recycled

was at Subway recently in smalltown Manitoba, they still stuffed orders into plastic bags but they have swapped over to paper straws which is nice

See nearly everything you buy here like fresh froot and veg from the big shops like tesco and Asda comes in either a poly bag or a plastic punnet. You can still buy loose shit but it's not like wholefoods or what ever yous have.

See all that shit, the councils and stores say it gets recycled,  does it fuck they ship it to China or somewhere and it sits in big fuck off mountains blowing all over the show in to the countryside.

I watched a TV show about it with hugh fernley whittingstall and he was pulling sainsburys carrier begs out of like streams and stuff in China.

they say it gets recylced, because they send it to the recylcling plant
most recycling plants can't do anything with what they class as "film" plastic, so they proceed to send it to landfill

McDonald's did that with the paper straws here too but I think it turns out they cant be recycled idk why I cant be annoyed to find a source on it atm lol

to my comprehension, they are not supposed to be recycled
the benefit of paper straws over plastic is that they are made from recycled material to begin with, and are biodegradable

Winnipeg has made use of them at the city zoo for years

ah, the issue has apparently come up in Canadian news already as well:
Quote:

The lowly plastic straw has become a flashpoint in a world realizing the enormity of its problem with disposable plastics, prompting a rash of announcements to ditch plastic ones in favour of paper.

But the founder of an Edmonton waste diversion company says that, while the move to plant-based materials is laudable, it may be still a wasted effort.

Literally.

"If these plant-based straws, these paper straws, go to the landfill, they don't decompose," Courtney Powell, founder of Elevated Enviro, told CBC's Edmonton AM on Tuesday.

"Nothing really decomposes in a landfill. So it is no different than a plastic straw going there."

According to Powell, the move to biodegradable materials is only effective if it is accompanied by an on-site composting program.

Otherwise, he said, it's just another piece of garbage heading to the dump.

Quote:

Powell explained that the landfill operations involve spreading the garbage and covering it with dirt or gravel, removing contact with air.

Without air, decomposition does not happen, he said.

"You could literally bite into an apple, throw it into a landfill, come back 50 years later and that apple would still be there," he said. "It wouldn't be in perfect condition but it would still be there."

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/paper-straws-not-biodegradable-in-landfill-1.4751021

the zoo does waste sorting and composting on-site if my recollection is correct,
so did not consider it from this angle previously

i dont see the point of using a straw unless you're dining in a restaurant and you dont want your mouth on the glassware. if its spilling the drink you're worried about, dont fill the cup to the brim.

straw was advised by dentist
apparently lemon water is good for you, but the lemon acid is terrible for teeth enamel
the straw effectively shoots it past your teeth, rather than constantly washing over them

yeah
to my comprehension the US actually processes some of your own recyclables tho
Canada basically just seperates out recyclcables, then ships them off

there was a big hubub in the news a few months back with the Philippines being pissed off about a cargo ship of trash that had been sitting there since our previous government was in power

There a plant near here which is an incinerator.  I cant remember the scientific name for it but I had an interview there once and I got asked back for a second interview based pretty much on the fact that all the way through the first interview I kept calling it by its proper name where all the other applicants called it an incinerator.

I reckon I'd have got the job but i didnt go to the 2nd interview because i was actually just at the start of a like 3 fucking month vodka binge which ended with me going to a&e and probably that's when I lost my driving licence too..

Anyway they burn fucking everything plastic, tires, general rubbish. But it burns at such a high temperature that there are no toxic gases or smoke or shit and they then turn that heat in to electricity by idk heating water or some shit and then call it green energy

When it was on the ballot in California a few years ago, I voted for it :yesnod: ....

....but now I kinda regret doing so for several reasons :sadyes: . I feel stores should not be allowed to sell any plastic bags or any single use bags, at all...Only bags that will last at least several years, made from re-cycled material or from a material that will decompose quicker/more cleanly than plastic. When one takes a step back, looking at the big picture that is our planet, plastic bags are fucking retarded.

Since this passed in California, charging 10-cents per bag....Lots of stores have started making their standard plastic grocery bags (for 10 cents) much thicker and more durable compared to before this started to happen in Cali....I'm assuming this has been done thinking that the customer is going to re-use the 10-cent bags they bought, because they are thicker/more durable than before and because the customer actually had to buy the bags, if it's something one spends money on they're more likely to use it again right?

But that's not what's happening at all...So many people are lazy and careless...Lots of folks will pay for the plastic bags at 10 cents a pop and then toss them away or never even attempt to use them again, because they can "afford" it, and with out thought about the whole reason why this bag tax started in the first place. And not only that, but people on EBT/welfare ("cal-fresh in california) do not have to pay for bags, so they get a bunch of new plastic bags each time they go shopping, they don't have to pay for them, this whole thing doesn't affect them in anyway.

Damn near no one thinks about pollution, this doesn't registered in peoples minds as a pollution issue, people are lazy & careless and stuck in their habits in a zombie-like manner, --pay for the groceries--reach for plastic grocery bag...There's rarely the thought, "If I buy this big re-usable bag I won't have to use any plastic bags ever again".

The typical plastic bags at grocery stores are much thicker now though, it feels like they contain two to three times as much plastic/mass than the old bags, and they feel much more durable....So a very small portion of the population has made the switch to purchasing an actual re-usable grocery bag (I'm talking about a large bag that will last years, not the typical plastic grocery bags), and now the plastic grocery bags are thicker containing more plastic than before....

.....I honestly feel this has created and dumped even MORE plastic into the environment, considering how few people have bought a re-usable bag, how thick/durable the 10-cent plastic grocery bags are, and how many people throw away or don't re-use the 10-cent plastic bags. Each 10-cent bag is like two to three of the old plastic bags, and damn near no one re-uses them. Just as many bags are being used only one single time and then thrown away, but now those bags are thicker and contain even more plastic than before.

And on top of all of that...I don't recall off the top of my head and too lazy to look into it right now, but where the fuck is that 10-cents going and who the fuck was lobbying for this in California?.....IIRC that 10-cent cost per bag isn't going into any sort of fund for the environment, pretty sure it is just filling up the pockets of some folks somewhere.

The entire thing is a sham and I really regret voting yes for it.

Stores should not be allowed to sell, or offer for free, any plastic/single use bags at all. It is senseless. Retarded as fuck. I hate everything about this "throw away" culture...it is fucking disgusting, foul, gross nasty shit.

People...All of of ya'll!....Get some re-usable grocery bags...Don't ever use a plastic bag again, certainly don't ever PAY to use a plastic bag again...And if you can afford it, buy some proper re-usable grocery bags for some of your family & friends too.

5 cents in DC and parts of Maryland. Apparently Montgomery county has raised over $100 million in the past five years and as someone who spends a lot of time in the woods, I see far fewer plastic bags if any. Great idea. Every place should do it.

in ontario they charge 5 cents for a bag, it pissed me off at first, I think I was like 15,but I dont mind paying now. My question is do the stores get the money or is it like a tax? itd be cool if the money went to something usefull. What really pissed me off was when the LCBO stopped providing bags at all, the LCBO is a liquor store so the bags were extra thick to hold the heavy booze, I reused those bags for everything, they were quality bags

in 2021 canada is banning all single use plastic, which sucks because my gf is on city water and I hate it, it taste funny when I add salts, so I buy 1.5 litre bottles of water which will be banned, I wonder if bags will get banned, as they are single use plastic

speaking for CT
they cant decide if it's a tax or a fee
the prices are set by the state and the money goes to the state
but it seems to be up to the store to report how many bags are being "sold"
the fee should be exempt from tax but the state received sales tax when the store purchased the bag

We have a bag tax in my state.

It's great. The tax has substantially decreased plastic bag use. It definitely works.

they say it gets recylced, because they send it to the recylcling plant
most recycling plants can't do anything with what they class as "film" plastic, so they proceed to send it to landfill

China stopped taking plastic waste sometime last year, or year before. No one wants the shitty plastic. We got oceans full of the shit.

I like about 2 or 3 plastic bags a week for lunches and food waste in my truck, but could probably get away with paper if they weren't available.

It's a bit more work, and a little bit annoying, but I like the change. It reminds me of when I was young and they used to use paper bags at the grocery store. The paper bags seem higher quality to me anyway. Plus it's better for the environment, and most important of all, you won't have those shitty white plastic bags clogging the sides of every road in town.

Plastic bags haven't even been around that long, they're ugly, they're shitty, they're bad for cities and for the environment, maybe we shouldn't have them at all? They kind of suck compared to paper bags.

Paper bags are worse for the environment in most studies. But they don't cause outright visible pollution

Reusable bags made for the sole purpose of holding groceries typically carry a larger carbon footprint than standard plastic bags unless you use the reusable bag over a thousand times, by which time most people will have tossed them. Actually using a reusable bag all the way to it's full term would be more of an achievement than not, and you'd need to consider that one person with such a bag who actually is in the habit of using them, may own several such bags that are not in regular rotation and may never be.

Then there is still the issue of ocean pollution with a thin plastic bag though.

I'm fine with the taxation of plastic bags as a means to reduce their usage. But the more environmentally cognizant approach on the individual level would probably be to instead reuse the plastic bags that are now standard until they become unusable rather than buying a reusable bag that will never be used to it's full state. And at a larger scale, to tax corporations and governments that willfully dump their costs in the ocean cheaply, and to put a ban on shipping waste products to other countries (China, Thailand, Vietnam) that in turn just take all the valuable stuff out and dump the invaluable rest of it in the ocean anyway.

Straws are relatively insignificant in the grand scheme of plastic waste as a whole. I get the movement to get them banned, but it's a bandaid kind of thing to get things rolling and has satiated the populace, before long people will be dumping their metal straws in the dumps because they've become a hassle to clean or didn't sell on store shelves, the Chinese will extract the steel straws from the rubbish and melt it down and they'll dump the nylon packaging they came in in the ocean back in our direction.
