First attempted grow

Hi guys finally decided to start my first attempt at growing. I bought a multispore b+ syringe and inoculated sterilised grains on Thursday. Today is day 5 and I am seeing some growth already, from my reading this seems fairly quick from a multispore syringe. Getting myself worried that it could be contamination. Is there any way to tell the difference from mycelium first signs to a contam? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Pics would do a world of good in a diagnosis.

If you really want to make sure your spawn is clean, clean the rest of the syringe up on agar. MS syringe -> grains is a crap shoot.

Did you sterilize your grains or did you buy pre-sterilized?

I do wish you the best of luck and congrats on getting going on your first grow.

Thanks for the reply,

I bought pre sterilized grain bags to get started while I gather all the equipment I need to be self sufficient. Just wanted to get an early taste for it.

My phone camera is not the greatest and when I try to get a pic you can't really see much as it turns out blurred. I will upload the best pic I can get although I don't know if it will do much good.

Ya, can't tell from that pic.

I really hope it works out, but shooting MS into a pre-sterilized bag, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Pressure cooker and jars should be delivered this week so even if it don't work out I will start again =)

I'm not holding out hope if I'm honest upon close inspection it looks like lots of small strands growing from the grain. I'm thinking some sort of mold or maybe cobweb.

I will just take it as a learning experience, going to hold on to them to see how they develop so I can get a grasp on the process.

The picture is kinda fuzzy, but that growth looks more gray and slimy rather than white and cottony or ropey. Since it's in a bag anyway, I'd poke the side of the bag with a finger and watch if the growth oozes around like a gel (or like bacterial pus), or does it hold to the grains, the way mycelium would. If your bag has a filter patch, you can also go by smell.

Picture doesn't do it justice it is like cotton in some places and seems fairly dry. My best description is it is like lots of white hairs coming of the individual grains thick in some areas.

My issue with it is some areas seem to be really fine hairs and I was thinking it could be cobweb. I was expecting to not see anything for a lot longer as it was from a Ms syringe and 5 days seems fairly fast.

I have nothing to compare it too as I have never observed mycelium growth before.

Just thought I would post a bit of an update.

Checked on the bags today, a lot more colonized about 40%, so I have gave the bag a shake.

My early worries I believe we're due to the fact I have never seen mycelium growth before. Now that it has thickened and grown I can clearly see what myc should look like 😊 had a quick smell round the filter patch and I have a lovely smell of mushrooms emanating from it.

Getting excited already lol. Going to be spawning to bulk, hopefully all goes well. I can see how people get hooked on the hobby.

Going to start looking at cloning and agar work, is it worth investing in any extra equipment for this?

You are watching it too much bro. I get presterilized bag from a buddy of mine, nothing wrong with it if your source is good. But your picture isn’t that good, but from what your saying the slim and grey isn’t a good indicator. But usually you’ll have growth off myc within 7-14 days. Your bag won’t fully colonized for a little bit though. Once your bag is 70% colonized you can go ahead and break it up in the bag and let it sit again to colonize faster. Next 2 or 3 days it will speed up. Also easy indicator of a contam Ed bag is smell your filter patch. Smells like green grass and shroomies your good. Let it keep going until it grows or contams. If it smells fowl or off then toss it.

I'm not worried now buddy, seems to have been good growth since I posted first pic there is no slime and the growth has thickened and looks white now.

Broke them up today as there was a substantial size colonize maybe 30 or 40 percent. After I broke up I smelt the patch and it has the smell of mushrooms from the supermarket. The grass smell is a good shout too.

I won't be touching again now until full colonization.

So bit of an update out of the 4 bags I had one contamed really bad, upon inspection of the bag it seems it had not been sealed properly which I presume is where the contaminant came from. other 3 bags fully colonised as of yesterday.

Prepared my sub using damion5050's bucket tek and just spawned 3 bags to bulk. Going with bod's tek for the unmodified mono. So excited that I have got this far I really did not expect it. Fingers crossed that the rest is plain sailing and really looking forward to my first pins.

Will update further throughout the grow and will add pictures at the end.
