Because its coir and pasteurization is for saving thermophilic organisms which aren’t present in coir. Plus if they were I already killed them when I last bucket tek’d it. The coir I use is AG which has a few more leafy and woody bits that the pet store kind, but this is the first I’ve seen contaminant growth, however I prepped it in a dirty kitchen and left for a week so I’m not really surprised. I cleaned the kitchen when I got back but didnt get to the coir for another week. Went to use it last night and big nope.
Also after 250 for 2 hours the center of the bags were barely 130
After I dumped into cooler and mixed up temp was around 140 and held for the night to ~130 this Am so I basically did pasteurize it. Hopefully the mucor mold was eliminated.

Maybe its not fast and loose and I just have a slightly better grasp on microbiology and pasteurization, I’ve been studying soil science, making ferments, compost, compost teas and canning/pickling food for many years. Plus Pasty, Bod and Mushboy (and a few more TC’s I’m sure) have all used sterilized (in a PC) coir or cvg with no issues. Most varieties of Mucor generally stop reproducing and die above 97 f so In my eyes what I was doing was even a little overkill tbh. People underestimate the power of clean spawn and good conditions. These things grow in cow shit in fields, with enough FAE and the right field capacity/humidity you can get away with damn near anything and still grow some mushrooms.

I have used PCd coir to great success with good spawn and terrible failure with poor spawn. Same goes for bucket tek.

Im the kind of person that will set sub thats gone bad outside on a tarp in the grass for a few days then pasteurize, ive had better experience putting microbes back in my sub then i have just recooking it. Could be purely anecdotal tho

Sounds pretty anecdotal to me, plus I only have a little postage stamp yard, there an alley that runs past it that gets lots of foot traffic and neighbors on all sides anything I do in the yard is highly visible and I have to take all my spent subs to a different property to dump them. I was considering just taking it and dumping but it was a 10lb blocks worth of coir and it felt too wasteful and like more effort than attempting to recook it, which I was able to accomplish baked out of my mind around midnight last night without leaving the house or spending a cent.

Yeah that's how it looks. It will get ropey on yeah eventually. if u see a sector start to really stand out and start running faster then the rest of the plate grab it. But yea it's in the thicker side of things.

I hear APE can be pretty tricky. Hope to try my paw at it some day. The PE im running absolutly does not like a casing. Go figure.
I confess... I was playing it fast and loose. Spawned some jars i knew i shudnt and BAM!!! 3 of my big tubs triched out bad and one sprouted patches of sporulating brittany murphy. One had this crazy patch of blood red mold going. Jst tossed them. That's what i get for getting sloppy.
