Is this scale or an infection of some sort?

Not scale and kind of a semi-infection, that is now on the mend.

Your cacti is a Trichocereus bridgesii and these are known to suffer from weeping Black wounds from time to time.

People in the scene refer to it as, Weeping Black Rot. Obvious name......

These tend to pop up in humid climates/times, but soon tend to clear up, scab over and look like yours do.

Adding Calcium and Magnesium seems to help. You can give a fertiliser with this in it. add Garden lime each season or source a product called, CalMag, or similar name/product.

Searching Weeping Black Rot in this forum will bring up more information.

If they occur in future it's wise to withhold watering and try and keep the wounds dry until they dry out. Spreading the ooze risks spreading to adjacent specimens so be careful of that too.

Thanks for that. I havent got CalMag yet but Ive been giving him coconut water every couple weeks. And yes Im in FL its been very wet and humid the last few weeks.

Don't worry about the coconut water. I know you want pups but forcing growth in a humid climate is asking for bad juju. Lots of pups equals lots of fresh supple growth for the weeping rot to get into. Also lots of pups means more crevices for water to pool, creating more humidity.

Learn to grow them first then try out the social media experiments. I know it looks cool and all but sometimes these hacks/tricks can backfire on you. Costing you time and money. Cuts aren't cheap these days. Grafting is the way for more biomass if you're looking to increase your collection. Coconut is for, well, the coconut growers. Haha.

And that makes a lot of sense, cause the one pup/branch hes thrown was in May before the humuidity really kicked in and before I started the coconut water. I don't know the brands. I'm from another continent that you. Also the future if you account for the time difference...:bongload:

I do know that you can find out a good brand local to you by searching the groups on facebook. There's a preferred one the locals suggest. Any brand will do the job though. A specific brand isn't needed.
