Pastywhyte’s Ez dialed monotubs 79

Hey people what’s happening
I been busy as hell but I wanted to share a little something with ya! Since I started growing in monotubs I have found dialing them in to be tricky. Polyfil sucked balls to get right, micropore was a bit easier. I liked micropore for its ability to do a few runs before I felt the need to change it however, I still wanted something I didn’t need to ever think about again. A while back there were people and journals looking to do just that, using strategically placed smaller holes. It was a good idea but there was a lot of gadgets and measuring equipment involved. It was a cool thread watching the R&D and I learned a few things. But AFAIK nothing ever came of it in terms of a tek.
Well I started to experiment with the idea. I didn’t have any gadgets but I did have an idea of how I liked my fruits to look. So I got some tubs, a drill, and got busy. Ideally this tub for me can be spawned and fruited with nothing over the holes whatsoever. However anyone rocking a mono setup knows you need to dial stuff in sometimes to account for position within the rooms currents, or if you got the heat or AC coming on a lot. This setup works pretty good so far for me in my house but some people may want to tape a hole or occasionally mist if needed. If you want more FAE you should add the optional holes. However the need to maybe tape a hole or mist a tub isn’t a big deal in my eyes. Far better than fucking with polyfil or replacing micropore tape. I will admit I haven’t done a huge number of tubs with this final iteration that I present here, but so far I feel it’s doing well. You be the judge.
Material needed.
1 66 quart sterlite tote (purple handles are my jam) A drill 1/4” drill bit
Holes are drilled lower at sub level on the long sides. If you want more FAE you can add a lower hole on the short sides as well (optional, see below). This might be too much for people in dry climates. The sub level holes are drilled 5” up from the bottom. I place them on the long sides 3” from the sides of the tub, then a final hole in the center between them. You want there to be around 1.5”-2” of clearance from the drilled hole to the top of the substrate. You do not want the hole right down low barely clearing the substrate as this will dry the substrate out.

The top hole clusters are centered at the top of the short sides. The first hole is drilled 1.5” below the purple handle. Then drill a hole one either side spaced out 1” - 1.25” on the centres. The second row is located about 1” below the fi rst one, drill two holes 1” - 1.25” apart, centered in relation to the top row. Done.
Optional: If you live in an area with higher humidity or you like to case, you may want to add another hole on the short sides. A FAE boost is never a bad thing. I drill those up 5” from the bottom and centered. Easy.

Now spawn your tub as you like. Lately I been doing 4 quarts spawn to a brick of coir and 3 quarts verm. It’s easy.
Melmac PE not complaining.

Got 3 tubs I've been planning on modifying tomorrow. Might as well give it a shot.

Word. I've wanted to try exactly this for quite some time but haven't gotten around to it. Thanks man. Is this your first go at it or.... Have you been hiding this from us for a while?

I first started messing around with these hole configurations years ago, back when I was doing mini monos a lot. But the idea of no tape or poly whatsoever monotubs is one I’ve been playing with for some time as well. Maybe 6-7 months back I started testing things. Just very limited frequency since life been super busy for me and that ain’t gonna change anytime soon. However I feel this has been fleshed out enough to post.

this is as close as i got to doing multiple holes

i taped up the larger holes because they were way too large and used poly on the top row.
 did not perform well

worked on it and dialed it in
kept the top holes open and the bottom ones taped up

I have a few monos I wanted to push out but have been a bootbox/shoebox guy due to the ease and repeatability; I may give this a go and see how they do
Nice work!

Been wondering why we make big ass holes and then restrict the airflow for a minute now. Was thinking about experimenting but shit.. Thanks for already doing the damn thing!
Just got some new tubs and I’ll try a couple like this out, I’ll probably be adding those ancillary holes my climate is humid as fuck and I need to rock a dehumidifier just to make traditional monos work.

I am excited to keep following this thread with updates etc, it seems like a cool happy medium between the unmodified tub and the tub with holes and poly.
I have a few dozen poly tubs, and I'm about to go buy more before my next spawn run. I am interested in doing a group run at this idea if anybody else is interested in joining. A community proving ground? Perhaps 10 tubs with holes like this to compare next to the rest of the tubs in your grow with polyfill in them?
I'm down if you guys are.

Awesome, Pasty!
So no issues of dryness during colonization of the sub? And have you run varieties you're really familiar with so you have a good comparison?
We're generally pretty humid here, and unmodified tubs didn't work well for me. I need to get a few more tubs and think I'm going to try this out on them.

So far I have only run the PE in this version of the tub. Previous versions I ran RW in. I’m not really growing anything but PE varieties and RW these days. The long pin time for PE did require me to mist a few of these tubs once or twice, but nothing excessive. If you live in a humid area you will likely not need to mist at all.

Was there any consensus on the performance of unmodified monotubs? That was the last major change in tub technology I remember seeing.
