Better picture, also notice the cake in the back. All those pins started growing on the bottom! Is it okay to flip a cake depending in how the pins grow

You ought to have more holes in that SGFC it looks like. Just prop your rack up on something to make it higher.

I put a little tinfoil under it to prop it up a little. I can just add more as I needed I guess, and my FC has 12 or so holes running along the sides with cotton balls in them. I did 20 or so for my other terrarium and thought they might not be getting the humidity they needed so i added less to this one

What these guys are getting at is that usually pf cakes like this are fruited in a SGFC(ShotGun Fruiting Chamber).  Check out some threads on it.  It provides a lot of humidity while also maintaining high levels of FAE(Free Air Exchange).

While that's what's recommended, it's not necessary.  SGFCs often have several inches of wet perlite in the bottom and it appears you do not.  As such, if you had many more holes, you'd lose all humidity and have worse conditions for your project.

Frankly you can grow cakes in a humidity chamber/moisture chamber, or whatever they call it.  Essentially a tub without holes to maintain high humidity.  There's a few writeups on it.

Frankly, I'd just keep chugging along like you are on this grow and consider bulk for the next project.

To answer your question on what you ought to do with the mushrooms growing down: Don't do anything.  Just let them grow.  It won't hurt anything if they contact the perlite and they won't stop growing cause they point downwards.  The reason they're pinning in the locations they are is due to surface conditions.  Many of our Trusted Cultivators have written information on getting proper surface conditions to encourage your project to pin where you want it to(though admittedly most of the information specifically applies to bulk projects).  Feel free to use the search engine towards that end.

I think Bod has a writeup on using the search engine.  It's incredibly powerful if you know how to use it.

Thank you for the response. This is my first grow, and I used three different strains. Golden Teachers, Blue meanies, and South American. I more or less wanted to grow them, collect the spores, rinse, repeat and it has gone well. I just dont know the ins and outs of the process. I have pearalite in the bottom of the chambers, i wouldnt say its a few inches though, just enough to cover the bottom.

I've taken spore prints from all of the bigger, and mature fruit I have harvested, and I have already inoculated other jars with the spores, and they have already shown growth so i'm optimistic about it. It's not about how to grow them now, but how to grow them the best I can. I have a few other questions though, if anyone can answer.

Spore prints, does it matter what paper you use? I just used plain printer paper, and made syringes with them and they worked, because my new jars show growth.

Not used spore prints, how long do they last? How should I store them?

How often should i change the layer of pearlite at the bottom of my SGFC, every few flushes, or just once every grow?

How do you clean a syringe to make it usable again ? Is hot water enough?

I've put cotton balls in the holes in my FC, is this helpful? Or even needed? Someone told me that it keeps air flow, while keeping humidity up and contams out.

My new FC has a black lid,is that okay? Do the pins grow towards the light? Or do they just need light to make the cakes start pinning?

I'd like to look into a monotub type grow, but it seems out of my league at the moment, as im trying to stick with what I know works.

Anytime Brother.

Way to get at it.

You're welcome to use paper, but I would expect the spore prints to last a much shorter period of time due to increased airflow, light, and perhaps chemicals in the paper from bleaching it or whatever.  It's pretty standard practice to use aluminum foil for taking prints.  You can use the cheap stuff but it doesn't take much foil and if you use the thicker heavier duty variety it'll be much easier to work with and not crinkle as easily(though that's just aesthetics).

If you're looking for long term storage, I'd pack them up(after they've dried of course), vacuum seal them, and toss them in the back of your freezer.  Don't remove them from the vacuum sealed bag until the whole thing has reached room temperature(I'd wait a full day to be sure) otherwise they'll condense water on them and shorten the lifespan.

I'd recommend you change the perlite once per grow.  You shouldn't need new perlite, if it were me I'd simply clean it.

To clean a syringe, bring a pot of water to a rolling boil and suck boiling water into the syringe till it's completely full, then empty the syringe into your sink.  Repeat 3 or 4 times and the last time, instead of spraying the water into your sink, cap the syringe.  You now have a clean syringe of sterile water with which to make your next spore syringe.

You can use cotton balls but I'd recommend using polyfill(pillow stuffing, you can buy a big ass bag of it cheap at any major retailer) or micropore tape(paper medical tape) PastyWhyte has a writeup on it.  They will primarily help restrict the airflow going into the tub.  You'll want some of the holes with more airflow than others.  Read up on monotub teks for more info on cutting the holes and placing the filter material (eatyualive, pastywhyte, spitballjedi, frankhorrigan, bodhisatta all have teks on it).  Eatyualive even uses a pink filter that is reusable and looks even easier than micropore tape, though I haven't tried it.  It also does help with controlling humidity(by controlling airflow(FEA), and potentially helps filter contams though that doesn't really matter because we spawn open air.

Black lid is ok, they might grow sideways.  If you're worried about it you can turn the tub around every couple days so they grow more or less upright, but the direction they grow in doesn't really matter except for how pretty they are.  This guy used solid opaque tops and look at his success. -> https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26090071

Doing bulk with monotubs seems super intimidating, but it's honest to God, super simple.  The one thing you should do before going to bulk and doing monotubs is get into agar.  You should do it anyways if you're going to be growing at all.

I just harvested the fruits from one of my Blue Meanies ( the one I had a problem with growing downwards) wanted to share the update!

Before harvesting

After harvesting

My other cake, which hasnt matured yet

My older cakes, in a different chamber. They are still making small clusters, but the veil is breaking very early when the shrooms are smaller, im guessing this means the cake is near the end of its cycle?
