I know why I have Mini-mushrooms...
    #2613348 - 04/28/04 11:01 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

<<See page 2 for the resolution.>>

1.  AFOAF's lizard has a Dunked, double-end cased cake (verm) that is likely to be suffering from lack of Rh(see 2).  It has a mushie that's <1" tall but looks like a mature specimen ready to sporolate.  This is indicated by it's upside down umbrella shaped top and exposed gills.  He's panicing so he's going to try and print it (because that would be considered a success for him).  Is he wasting his time?  Is it immature and not viable?

2. This initial mushie seemed to stall as the Rh was only around 82-85%, he improved this with a bubbler (only to 92% (stable)).  At first signs of this improvment it grew to it's current size.  he has a small-ish (3 cake) clear container with 1.5" of Perlite + 1.25" of Water.  He assumes this is too much water correct?  Reduce it to .25", .5", or .75"?  *shrugs*  Can't find the exact answer.

3.  Finally, there ARE about 30 or so pretty little pins that a little bit behind the first one.  Are they going to be ok?  Should he wait to print one of these?

Thanks all...

PS - Apologies.  He doesn't have a pic, so he must write 1,000 words...  :nut:

EDIT:  This isn't my pic, but it's EXACTLY how mine turned out while having this problem.

One more thing: There is mycelia growing on the mushies which is a classic indication of low Rh if I'm not mistaken...

i thought myc growing on the mushie's was a sign of high humid. also on a side note i noticed that when i do have a little myc trying to creep up the stems of my pretties they grow faster and seem to get a little bigger over all.If i get my myc. getting out of hand i just lower the humidty for a couple of days and they seem to straighten out.to answer you question smaller caps just mean smaller prints....the spores work the same not mater what the cap size, unless you are trying to clone a mushie and get a isolate on some agar but i have no exp. in that if that is what you are after.

I see, I hope the print turns out. Still interesting that these guys are so terribly small. So you think that a lower Rh of 92% should work for cakes?

Thanks for responding, this must be a stumper.

cakes should be in as close to 100% as possoble, casings about 90%.if you cant get the humidity up,try casing the cake after this flush.Do you have perlite in there?

He does, and a bubbler. Maybe too much water though. He's probably going to set up another PMP to see if he can get better results. Casing is probably the better way to go anyway. Can you use ~90% Rh for casing throughout. He's seen the 95-100% recommended for pinning, but is it absolutely necessary?

Oh, and in case it matters. GT is the strain.

the wonderful thing about casing's is that the casing layer holds alot of water and the mushies can just take what they need.the way i tell if my humdity is where I want it to be is if their are some small droplets on the walls of the pmp but not on the ceiling this all with good air exchange and a temp between 70-80 will give you what you want.good luck and enjoy

Thanks all. He's just going to have to get a pic of those little mini's. They're so cute (albeit frustrating)! In case you missed it, they are less than 1" tall -yet look just like a mature, sporulating 6" fatty... *sighs*

...probably potent as all get out tho...

One last question: Although the mini's are showing gills and such, He hasn't even seen a single sign of a veil. Is he just missing the veil because they're so small?

A friend of mine ended up with a bunch of mini-mushrooms not too long ago. His were cambos. Not a single one was a normal sized mushroom, although he ended up harvesting hundreds of mini-cambos. Some of his had veils, and some of them didnt. He also had a casing of the same strain which produced the same sized mushrooms. Here is a picture of his mini-cambos that he had on a cake:

The environment was not his problem. Here is a pic of some South Americans he has growing at the same time in the same chamber. Same substrate and recipe, same spore source, and same amount of TLC.

I would not worry about it too much. It seems like this just happens from time to time. Good luck with all that!

Thanks for the input. My FOAF's were much smaller than that though; the biggest was about the size of the smallest in that pic. Just a little larger than a big abhort. If it was an abhort it would never have opened it's cap though right?

He's just going to have to see if casing that same cake improves the results... I'll post to this thread if it does or doesn't.

It just happens sometimes.

Here's a mini shroom I found growing outside.

Psilocybe Cubensis

Thats an abortion not a proper shroom...
Easy to tell from the pointy cap and dark brown color

That shroom was full term. The color in the photo may have made it look darker but it was a light tan - golden colored cap that produced spores. I'd say it made it to maturity. I've also seen quite large mushrooms that exhibit a "pointy" cap.

Interesting pic.  Given the proportions, My FOAF's little mushies are about half as tall but look just like a big'un!  His seem to have a fully developed cap and stem, having the classicly mature parasol shape and what-not.  Similar to the icon for this post in fact.  The good news is that they seemed to be more potent (gram for gram) than any others I've had.  There's still hope...
