Casing 3rd flush, pins forming at sides below casing layer
    #2612997 - 04/28/04 09:31 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Hello,

My friend has a casing which on it's first flush was too dry, and subsequently pulled away from the sides. Please note this was my friend's first casing, so a learning experience for her.

On the casing's 2nd flush she noticed the lack of pins (there were some though), at harvest time she found out that there were many shrooms... but they had grown below the casing layer down the side of the container (they had not breached the casing layer and had grown in many directions)

She assumes this was due to the casing pulling away from the side on the first flush and forming hyphal knots in those spaces.

The containers are not see through, but of course the casing would have seen light in between flushes (it was dunked) and when it pulled away from the side.

Her aim of course is to stop this happening on further flushes of this casing, and also to prevent this issue completely on new casings.

After the first flush of the above casing, she scratched the surface of the casing layer (she did not cut it away completely) and patched the surface. She put casing material (60/40) around the sides where it had pulled away but not right down to the substrate (so where it pulled away she only patched the surface, so there would have been gaps right next to the substrate but not above the substrate - hard to explain but hopefully you get it - basically there were air gaps next to the substrate, but the casing did not have gaps next to it).
Obviously her method is the reason shrooms have grown under the casing layer.

To stop this on further flushes of this casing, should she just find a bigger container and recase ALL around the sides of the casing? ie surrounding the casing completely with new casing?
Should she reincubate after this?

And to stop this happening on future casings, should she just water more to stop it drying out?
If she had fully cased the sides (where it had pulled away) after the first flush would she have prevented this completely?

Thanks for your help, and sorry for the long post.

Naw, to much of a risk of contams if you try to move it around and recase and stuff. Just pick the side shrooms completely off and you'll be fine.

Just mist the casing layer as needed (if you use coir it makes it easy cause the color lightens as it drys) it's safe to mist untill you see pins.
