    #618170 - 04/25/02 10:19 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

i was reading a post and saw someone mention using christmas lights on this inside of the terrarium for their lighting. would this work? or would the lights cause too much heat or something? thanks everyone!

This question is for the both of you... Are you placing the lights inside of your terrium? or the out side?

Will the lights be flashing? Or will they maintain a constant glow?

If the Christmas lights will maintain a constant glow, and is not being placed within the terrium, then that would suffice.

But if your lights are going to be placed inside the terrium, I would urge caution. The cord running from the lights will leave a small gab within the terrium that could allow possible contaminants to enter your grow space. It will also be difficult to keep the humidity consistant. Not to mention the fact that if the lights are not made for outdoor uses, you could only electrocute yourself, but you can burn your house down.

As for flashing lights, I would recommend against using them. We have experimented with flashing lights and noticed a delay in pinning along with skimpy yields.

I'm curious to hear other peoples results using the methods being discussed here.

I hope this information helps the two of you.

i was thinking christmas lights that were constantly on would be better. and i was thinking of taping them to the inside of the terrarium lid. either that or drilling some holes in the lid and sticking maybe 3 or 4 lights in the holes. what do you think about that? i am wondering if this would be too much light? i know the cord would leave a slight crack, but getting a terrarium 100% airtight is almost impossilbe anyways, right? i may just go with cutting a hole in the lid, covering it with something and using a regular flourescent light.

Thats a good point I forgot to mention: Christmas lights, even the ones designed for out door use, are NOT watter tight. In my experiment the lights will reside in a clear plexi-glass box (custom built) which will be afixed to the roof of the growing chamber. The cord pass-through will only give air access to the inside of the light box and NOT the the grow chamber it self.

I should also point out that I'm an assistant to a rather talented aerospces and electrical engineer which A: gives me unlimited access to an egineering lab and B: gives me access to a multitude of Mil. Spec. Building materials and equipment.

If you think there is any chance that you christmas lights might get wet, I wouldn't use them.

As for timing, I was thinking of setting them to 12 hr on/off cycle, I've read here on the board that that seems to work well.

mighty_bop Said: "i was thinking christmas lights that were constantly on would be better. and i was thinking of taping them to the inside of the terrarium lid."

Tape will not hold the lights to the inside of the terrium. With the humidity level so high, the lights will just fall into the terrium. To dangerous in my opinion.

mighty_bop Said: "...or drilling some holes in the lid and sticking maybe 3 or 4 lights in the holes. what do you think about that?"

I think that is also dangerous. You will be exposing the area where the light connects to the power strip to moisture. Why not put a piece of Plexiglas on top of the terrarium, get one of those touch lights that is about $3.99 and place that on top of the Plexiglas for about 3 hours per day. That will be enough light. Or you can hang the Christmas lights over the plexiglass and you will be all set

mighty_bop Said: "...i know the cord would leave a slight crack, but getting a terrarium 100% airtight is almost impossilbe anyways, right?"

We are in the final testing stages of a Mushroom Growing Chamber that can become completely air tight. So I must say that it is not impossible. As soon as our tests are complete, we will introduce it to the Shroomery Community.

mighty_bop Said: "i may just go with cutting a hole in the lid, covering it with something and using a regular flourescent light."

That'll work

I hope I was able to help!
