internet security & privacy - general questions

for internet security & privacy generally how many separate steps & apps are necessary?
I guess first 1) a firewall and 2) virus protection
then: stop using an insecure browser such as Firefox & and switch to Epic or Tor? then stop using an insecure search engine such as Google and switch to duckduckgo, or startpage
But is a 'VPN' also necessary?
Is it the same for Mac & windows?
What are the best general recommendations, for Mac?
Thanks

when I go to down load Nerotik's [OLD] Network Security and Anonymity Guide, pdf
I get this garbage: <? $file = $_GET['file']; $name = preg_replace('/(^\d+-)/i', '', $file); $path = '/var/www/shroomery/attachments/'.$file;
if (!file_exists($path)){ $path = stripslashes($path);
etc. etc. not helpful for a beginner
guess I'll try Amazon, as this forum seems useless, at least for the moment, as regards this basic issue

Bumping your own thread to call the community useless...
I'm sure people will line up to help you now.

as if it makes any difference...but thanks much for bringing this subtle point to my attention...you must be truly brilliant...although you apparently missed the qualifications in your hurry to put me in my place,... but again none of this really makes any difference

Go use Tor, and otherwise forget any and all "advice" you've mentioned so far in this thread.
A VPN is very necessary. Matter of fact, it's probably the most important thing you've mentioned so far, with Tor as a close second. Isn't Tor a glorified VPN?
There's also the reality that nobody really cares until you're making six figures illegally. So, don't waste your time. Keeping your mouth shut is way more important.
Keep calm and carry on.

Sometimes trying to hide makes you stand out that much more. I suppose your precautions depend on how severe the consequences are for you, and whether or not you are already being closely surveiled (everyone is under some surveilance or another, to varying degrees). I don't think hiding in plainsight is unreasonable, nor do I think using TOR and/or VPNs is. It all depends.

1. Switch your OS from whatever it is to Linux. If you don’t know how to use Linux get a virtual machine (VM) and start with a beginner Linux like Linux Mint. When you learn mostly how it operates use that as your main OS. You can even look into Whonix.
2. Use Tor at all times in the Safest mode setting. This will disable Java, flash, and cookies. If you ABSOLUTELY need to go to the safer setting momentarily to enable those. Do NOT use a VPN with Tor.
3. Use a VPN that is not in the at least the 5 eyes. The 9 eyes is okay but can make it a little more difficult for them to get control of your data (assuming you live in the U.S. or one of the other parts of the 5 eyes). Use this at all times minus when you’re using Tor.
4. Use an email service that encrypts emails such as ProtonMail.
