Forstner bits are not good for drilling through lids. Use a split point bit for metal and plastic lids. Forstner bits are for wood

if you're just putting holes in the standard metal lids that come with mason jars...

I just use a nail, hammer and piece of wood to put 4-5 small holes in the top them i cover them with 3 or 4 pieces of micropore tape also known as paper tape.  Works great for me.

I also use SFDs. I have a bunch of stainless steel lids with the hole already in it for a straw. Those are nice.

A 1/4" hole is plenty big for the lid.

Frank used to use 1/2 holes with polyfil. I like using 3/8 holes with a sfd.

I've used a Forstner for all of my lids, both plastic and metal, and the results are perfect. With plastic I have cardboard on the underside of the lid so the pressure doesn't crack the lid (which usually happens if you're... Forstner too hard...)

They're just like 5-10 times the price of a split point which is made for going through sheet metal or thin plastic. A forstner bit is made for making a bore hole in something with a thickness like wooden cabinet doors for special hinges. Like a Cadillac spade bit

I find step drills to be just about ideal for going through sheet metal and thin plastic. They are self-guiding and don't punch through and tear like a twist drill can. Plus 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, and 1/2" can often be found on a single bit and it can be used to deburr the backside of the hole. Having said that, I just used a screwdriver and a hammer on the last metal lids because I didn't feel like digging out the drill motor and bits.

Forstners might be ok for plastic, but they're not made for metal.

I just turn my lids upside down and don't even make any holes. Works just fine and I don't have to use foil in the PC :thumbup:

I was thinking about this just the other day, but I already have a ton of jars with poly holes. :shrug:

That's the old Magic Mushroom Grower's Guide way!  Works mostly but you get contams when you shake the jar.

uh, no I don't :rofl: every grow I've done since like 2016 has been unmodded lids. they work just fine, no ifs ands or buts.

if that was the case, my Blenderless LI tek wouldn't work at all because I shake the shit out of all my receiving jars. but this is OT. sorry op.
