Ok, so like, I can't get into tool hardcore, but I guess it's because I've never listened to anything but their mainstream stuff.

I need some song titles to youtube that take me underground into some good shit from tool that is NOT mainstream.

I can get into the  mainstream stuff, but like, I need a guide here./ :customgrow420:

i think the last album was MAGMA in 2016. i havent heard anything new since that but fuck yeah that album is great.

i first learned about GOJIRA when they were billed as a support act for LAMB OF GOD, alongside DETHKLOK in 2012. i bought tickets to that show the day they went on sale.. well a few weeks later Randy from LOG gets thrown in jail and they cancelled the tour.. i was super bummed... ive been trying to see GOJIRA and DETHKLOK since then.. im going to see DETHKLOK in November at the ADULT SWIM featival in los angeles.. fuck, all this talking about it makes me want to go to that aftershock fest more and more..

they're very much an album band. i'd listen to their albums in chronological order starting with undertow.

undertow
aenima
lateralus
10k days
fear inoculum

opiate's their first album. it's a great album, but it doesn't really represent their true sound. i'd listen to it after their other albums. aenima and lateralus are their masterpieces.

i'd also recommend listening after dosing as their music is extremely psychedelic.

Tracks like that I tend to think of as pallette cleanser. If you're tasting food in a critiquing fashion you can eat foods or consume drinks with neutral flavour and it'll wash away that intensity of flavour so you can properly judge the next bite. Like something that will take away that toothpaste flavour so you can eat an orange in peace. I'm not gonna say I found Chocolate Chip Trip entirely pleasing to the ear but I don't think it's supposed to be. It's supposed to be a little grating and then that drum comes and it drives the rhythm of of it, the backbone. While I hate the description of a prog fan liking anything from a band because they just "get it," I think there's something to be said about strapping your ass in for an experience with a band you trust. It's all about that audioscape. You're not always supposed to like it. I don't know how many times the alarm clocks on DSOTM have pissed me off but it's still an integral part of the experience. Wake up.

10,000 Days (PT 1&2 sequentially) has given some of the most profound shroom/ DMT experiences of my life-- it was made for a short trip-- it is otherworldly perfect for it, IMO. Similar to Parabol/Parabola... just awe-striking and epic.

Dude. Thank you.  This is ecactly my thoughts about the little intermission tracks like choc chip trip.  Its like, each song is so long and takes your mind to such far away and deep places, if they just put each of these songs right after another i think the album would be draining after the midway point. These filler tracks allow the listener to come back to home base emotionally, conceptually, perceptually etc...and this allows the rest of the music to take them to just as far away and deep and meaningful places as the prior tracks did.

Ive been thinking about this a lot lately, so im really glad you brought that up.

Undertow
Fear Inoculum
Opiate(although i liked his energy here!)

Justin/Paul

Lateralus
Aenima
10,000 days
Opiate

Adam Jones

I've been really into Descending and Culling Voices. My top 2 for for sure. Then Fear Inoculum and Pneuma.

I get goosebumps around 5 - 7 minutes when the drums kick in with a sick beat, the bass comes in, and then we hear this part (my favorite part of the album):

Sound the dread alarm through our primal body
Sound the reveille to be or not to be
Rise
Stay the grand finale
Stay the reading of our swan song and epilogue
One drive
To stay alive
It's elementary
Muster every fiber
Mobilize
Stay alive

That's funny, that's lyrically my favorite passage from the album too!

Culling Voices seems under-appreciated, I haven't heard people talk about those much and it's my favorite song for sure
