Drugs are unpredictable, at best predictable and at worst predictable.

I do find that alcohol interferes with my mediation.  I also find that indulging in heavy foods, lack of exercise and sexual release interfere.  Sometimes they provide relief other times they take away a need for focus.

A lot changed for my mediation after stopping smoking tobacco regularly and starting vaping.  Smoking tobacco adds a lot of stress, physical and mental tension.

Perhaps it's all ignorance.  It's so hard to change perspective.  The lusts of being flesh.  Craving for some sort of relaxation.  Why's it so hard to just let go and find what we want without some sort of interaction?

Tobacco and alcohol both feel really bad to me if consumed on a regular basis but when I can limit my habit to once or twice a week they do seem to be beneficial for my depression in spite of what I am sure are many negative side effects. But I am under no pretences that I have the ability to happily live a meditative sober life so it's different depending on the individual.

Ya going without sex, or a drink would drive me nut's.  Well, solo sex.  Lol.

There's that part of me that still wants to taste the flesh of a female.

Buddhist morality is actually very specific.
There are separate rules for monks (&nuns) and laymen.
For the laymen there are basically " The Five Precepts"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhist_ethics

for monks:
"The Discipline of a Buddhist monk is a code of conduct is called the Vinaya"
it has hundreds of rules
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinaya

As for myself, I used to drink alcohol, off and on.
And I used to smoke tobacco off & on.
So I certainly don't judge those who do.
The older one gets, the usually, poorer the liver is at handling the toxic load.
And the more health conscious one gets, due to more health problems.

...It would seem that because of the stress of life,
and the overpricing of both psychological therapy and Medical treatment,
that many self medicate.
...Also western culture does not generally provide training in those practices that may help self regulate mood naturally, like, Pranayama, Tai Chi, or Chi gung, & especially not with really good teachers, being easy to find.
...Western purely physical exercise seems quite limited by comparison.
