ID help
    #2612419 - 04/28/04 06:54 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I am very new to shrooms and I happen to stumble across two mushrooms in a cow field on cow poo. Their stems are about an inch and a half long solid and slightly flexible. I think the are Copelandia cyanescens. they look like the pictures. I did a spore print and it was black. But it did not blue when handled. So can i eat this thing or what. Thanks.

Eeh.

Read the stickies up at the top of the forum, to see how you ask for an ID.

You need to add some more information.

Where do you live... ? Copelandia cyanescens only grow in tropical regions. No, you should NOT eat this until you have a 100% id'ed shroom.

The sticky post will tell you the information you need to list.

A question that would determine weather its a cyanescens or an inactive antillarum would be:

1) What is the size of the mushroom
2) What was it growing from
3) What is the exact coloration of the mushroom flesh (when fresh)

For comparisons of some Panaeolus antillarum mushrooms with Copelandia mushrooms, see below.

Here are four iamges of Panaeolus antillarum, a non =-spychoactive mushroom found in pasturelands throughout the world.

Four distinct images. Please observe the gill structure and notice how the gills grow out from the outer edge of the cap. The edges are white and the sporeprint will be black.

Usually when these are gone the copes appear or the cubes appear. Sometimes they all three can grow from a single manure pile, depending on spore depostits int he grass directly under the manure.

Some clusters of Panaeolus antillarum as you walk around in a pasture/rice paddie

And as uyou can see below, the antillarums can become quite hugh. HEre are two biug ones collected by Keyes, a member of my 2002 expedition to Koh Samui.

Observe no bluing whatsoever in the Antillarums

And now for some Copelandia

Here are some fresh Copelandia shrooms.

Fresh Copelandia cyanescens mushrooms in a manure heap in rice paddeie.

A close up of some fresh Copelandias in the ground.

Observe the gill structure of these Copes and then compare them to the Panaeolus antillarum gill structure posted above. See the differences?

Observe the bluing in a single specimen of Copelandia sp.

and several dried Copelandia with bluing in them to show you the bluing reaction and how it comes easy after picking if you do not handle the shrooms correctly when lifting them from the ground. i squeezed these to show this occurrence.

And this should help you in identifying the differences in these two species.

mj

mjshroomer, thats pretty good info... i hunt copes, and iv pretty much only been using the "blueing" and plus general appearance to tell the difference...

we do find A LOT of antils...

in my experience i see a lot more single antills, and the cyans are usually in groups on the cowshit....

the gill structure should help 100% for anybody to tell the difference....

we are going picking in a couple of hours, and again tomorrow, so we will see how it goes... hopefully we will get a good payload.. im goin to take some sporeprints for some people
