Need Help - Bulk Grows (Unforeseen Issues)
    #26118520 -

So I have been doing bulk grows (Bods Unmodified Tub, usually run about 10-15 tubs at a time) without any issues for some time. Spore needles from online source, using jars with whole oat grains, each jar has an injection port and breathing port with the lid covered by a filter disc from a supply company for mycology..

Inoculation takes place in a SAB using 1ml per jar, then labeled and put on a shelf. The room is climate controlled to about 79-83 degrees on average and my jars are usually fully colonized within 10-15 days time depending on the type of cubes I am working with. (I've grown Golden Teachers, Pink Buffalo, Blue Meanie Cubes, Koh Sumai Super Strain, Treasure Coast) Up until this last cycle I've had nothing but great success with my research.

Nothing in this last grow changed with my process, but a few things changed with my environment which I believe to be the culprits. Where I live is hot and humid and my home is a century home with bad insulation and no AC. My thought was to install a window unit, air purifier, and get shelving for the tubs to be stacked upon. Everything started out great, very fast growth in the tubs and completely covered with the fuzzy goodness in a matter of days so I was happy....then issues started happening. Noticed these random blueish/greenish spots on the tubs, these spots did not grow in size but they started appearing in all the tubs. At first, I thought it was possibly black grains or miscoloration, possibly a fruit fly landing and bruising may be happening...then other issues started, the tubs showed little to no pins on the surface and only on the sides. Temps maintained at about 74-78 consistently in the room, but the weird growth patterns bothered me. Then I noticed more and more discolored spots, but no off smells or anything.

Today I decided to toss the tubs as a mushroom had green on its based that I wiped off with my finger and there was no bruising underneath. When I tossed the tubs (9 total) they all had weird smells to them, not rotten or earthy, but almost like a chemical/sterile smell to them. There was no mushroom smell at all. So happy I tossed.

Questions:

1. How do you all control temps in hot areas?
2. Are window AC units bad news?
3. Would shelving cause weird growth patterns?
4. Do window AC unit remove that much humidity that the tubs can no longer maintain a growth environment?
5. Would moving everything into a grow tent with LED Lights make any difference to block out contams?

Thanks ahead for any help or insights you may offer.

Hey what's happening? So it sounds like your issues you're having with contaminants could be because of your window unit. Especially if it's an outdated model, or one of the cheapest ones you can find. A window units purpose is to pull not only the hot air out of the room, but also the humidity as well, the thing is it doesn't necessarily come back in as clean air. The humidity removed has a tendency to collect on the coils of a lot of units, and when this happens it's actually collecting all sorts of contaminants, and the most common is mold spores. So the chances are high that fairly high levels of mold, (which one I couldn't really tell you by the way) are coming back in when the unit is recirculating the air. Another thing with window units is that "you have to clean the filter thoroughly". If that thing isn't as clean as you can get it any outside air isn't going to be filtered whatsoever, and that can be a shitty situation feel me. And you have to make sure everything is properly sealed around the unit. If not obviously more potential contaminants will enter and will be continuously circulated.

I'm not saying that is the cause of your problem, but the chance it is related is good ya know? Maybe try to bring in a dehumidifier and thoroughly clean your unit, and figure out the proper cycle for it to run so your temperature can be ideal, and let the dehumidifier control your humidity levels. Just a suggestion.

i did not read your post but i will answer the questions
1) cost wise, you dont. Air flow is great if you can keep your RH, correct. Ac's are not worth it. Even if they dont like it cubes will grow and fruit in the upper 90s( right were bacteria thrives)
2) i would say no.
3)no unless your light really sucks on one or more levels
4) possibly, yes
5)grow tenet is no better then open air if your spawn is clean and sub is dealt with correctly.

Yeah, that all makes sense. I'm debating moving my shelves and such into the basement, as this house has old windows and all so it's near impossible to properly seal around the unit. It's a decent model AC and new, but it's probably as you said a bunch of issues compounding from that unit itself.

Thank you!

Nice and what I was thinking. Yeah, I got trich on tubs around the 3rd and 4th flushes, last month when the temps climbed into the high 80s/90s. Only thing I really noticed on the high heat temps was the mushrooms growing all wild or wilting in a sense. Maybe I'll just try it without the AC and see how it goes. Also debating moving it into the basement where temps are constant, just not a lot of light at all.

Have some Pans going in jars right now, so hoping to make things work so they can flourish as well.

I run a window unit in my area and have absolutely not problem from my tubs, Not mold or lack of humidity.

More than likely (I'm just guessing because I can't see you stuff), running Temp that high just allowed the contaminants that were already in your spawn (spawn wasn't clean) to have the perfect environment to prosper.

I also have tubs on shelves and no weird patterns have emerged.

My guess on controlling temperatures would be to install some sort of climate control (like air conditioning).

I would double check you sterile Tek and make sure everything is up to par and run some a/c (or hold off till it gets cooler).

BTW, I would edit out the vendors name. It's against the rules

I wish you the best of luck!!!!

And remember I'm not an expert just telling you from my experiences. Wait till someone with more experience, maybe they will have different advice

Thanks! Did not know that about vendor names and edited. Yeah it's been a weird cycle this time, as I've done about 10 cycles now total and never had any issues until this run. I'm going to move the tubs into my basement and set up lights around everything to see if that lower temp without the constant air flow from an AC helps out at all.

I've been using a portable AC and it has made me add an extra layer of tape on the holes if my micropore monos, that's it though no big deal. I think fruiting, and especially colonizing in the 80s is asking for trouble. Just because it can work doesn't mean its advised. If you choose to use the AC make sure the AC is pointed away from the tubs and check on your tubs 2x a day at first once they're in fruiting. If each time you check they are already dry on the surface simply add more poly or tape, or if using unmodified close the lid a bit. That's what I'd do anyway. 68 - 72 degrees is ideal

Interesting. When my jars are colonizing I keep temps 78-80's and haven't had any contam from my jars and this is the first time I've dealt with contam before a first flush and any I've ever had has only been one tub....this was all my tubs at once.

I was under the impression that 73-75 was the sweet spot for fruiting?

Thanks for the note! I am looking at everyone's suggestions here and taking notes, devising a new strategy with some new changes possible.

68 to 72 is ideal for growing cubes through all stages. You can have success outside of that range, although over time the odds are against you

Mushies have a bit of magic to them. They want to be eaten and grown, so they make it easy at first to get us hooked. In effects and growing practices

Afterwards, I've found, the journey gets tougher for awhile because their real goal is to make us grow

I had a a lot of trouble growing my first batch, and a few trial runs were ruin by contamination. This is the only helpful youtube video that has provided me with any value. Its a step by step process on how to grow magic mushrooms. And do it in a clean and sanitary environment.    https://clk.ink/J93hAs

Horse hockey. Dirty spawn = green tubs. Clean spawn = clean tubs. The AC cannot contaminate your clean culture and to reach that conclusion displays a complete lack of understanding of basic mycology. Stop putting spore syringes to grain jars and stop using ship's. Both are lazy noobish practices and help result on your current fruits.
