A couple of T1 plates from a clone of the blob/brain phenotype on this cake. Been getting the fin phenotype exclusively and I really like the brain so hopefully it carries over and it wasn't just some peculiar conditions in that one jar that caused it.

this is tw2 crossed with melmac. one of the crosses which i didn't post a pic of yet actually put out very strange looking fruits that produced spores. I'm doing spore work on that mutation right now. notice that large protuding baseball in the middle.. pretty cool -no tw2 tubs did this, but all the crosses did form that smooth white baseball structure amongst the waves.

multifractal said: I haven't seen good evidence for senescence occurring in cubensis to significant/noticeable degrees through successive subculturing but I'm interested to hear why you think this would affect potency as well.
Because I have had experience with that. I had a sporeless Purple Mystic cube strain I kept going for 5 years, and by the end they were barely potent at all compared to when I first got the culture.
Comparing fairy ring species or Armillaria species to cubensis is wrong, no other way to say that. We're talking about alkaloid levels, which no one is measuring the senescence of "medicinal" compounds in Armillaria sp. Not to mention cubensis did not evolve to build permanent mycelial structures like the others did. And Armillaria and various fairy ring species all drop new spores every time they fruit, so they are adding diversity back into the genetics. You're of course allowed your own opinion on the subject, but to make a blanket statement that senescence doesn't occur with cubensis because it doesn't seem to occur with drastically different species is just bad science. That's kinda like saying all birds should be able to fly because they're birds... Cubensis (a subtropical and tropical species) did not evolve under the same conditions as Armillaria or fairy ring species, as they do not have to contend with winters or the colony ever freezing.
To specifically address the "Enigma" isolate, test results show a variability of potency from 0.7% PSB to 2.26% PCB as of 2021, and the fruit formations have turned from consistent defined fins to spikes and now rounded blobs. So yes, I believe the senescence of the culture has already started to occur throughout the community. Remember, every single variant seen today came from a single isolate in 2018.
to throw this into the record..
in my experience cube strains sensecense after about 5 years of slant work on the same strain... i actually experienced this with two 5 year old strains of seperate cultures. one died last year, another showed signs of degredation this year. in my case i didnt' notice much potency loss, but the yield reduced 75% and it became very disease prone.

I have ran 20 shoeboxes of TW so far and not one has thrown an enigma mutation. How many tubs on average did it take you all to get the elusive blob?

I think enigma is passed on from one cultivator to the next, not a common occurance with your average tidal wave culture. I get lots of funky stuff coming out of my TW's but never anything that looks like enigma.

Well damn, I thought it was a reasonable goal to chase. I can't say I'm sad about the tubs of TW though, they perform pretty well for me.

That plate looks nasty; bacterial as hell. Not sure why you posted it in this thread, though.

its tidal wave so I know it does weird stuff but I'm not familiar with it yet. Just wanted to see if the odd growth was common with it. I don't see any bacteria just thick mycelium and the secondary fuzzy myceium.

There's some "vendors" on facebook selling supposed enigma AND Gandalf. Could've swore that last one wasn't supposed to be sold. Anyway, she's selling the "brain or coral" isolation I guess. I can't remember her name, but if you feel like looking through some of those groups and taking a chance. I dunno. I'm honestly wanting that freak in my stable too. But sounds like the average Joe is basically out of luck when it comes to that one. They're just so freaking awesome looking.

1st post! Hello everyone.

How is this looking as far as maturity? Im wondering where the area of most advanced growth is so I know where to start looking for clues as to when to harvest. First time with Enigma so I'm in the dark.

Looking good! They look like they got alot of growing left! My Enigmas fruit for about 6 weeks typically. Youll know to harvest when they start bluing and soften. Like this

I try not to let them get to soft because I find the clusters will stay together better when still slightly firm. But that is just personal preference.

Thanks for this thread Shroomery!!
We got a TW block ready to fruit... ' Will report and advised if warranted.
At this point all I can say is TW (from spores) is much faster to colonize than the NSS strain is. In the last quarter mile TW speeds up A LOT!

I still have one tub going. Spawned on 22 MAR. Still doing it's thing. Totally got the tub conditions wrong so nothing but edge growth, but it's growth nonetheless.
