When disposing of spent subs, particularly grain based, it would be wise not to place them right next to your house. Pests may move in to be close to the yummy food.
Almost did that because of the nice shady damp areas then saw an ant running around on the hunt, a squirrel in the tree bitching at me, and the light bulb came on.

If you get lazy with your prints, you will spend 100x more time cleaning them up on agar.
Not so much a tip as a word of warning. I learned my lesson.

Tip of the day. Soak your grains instead of cooking them. Put any grain in a bucket of water for 24 hours then drain and dry. It works with everything I have tried. You don't need your grain to be cooked just hydrated. No burst grain unless you forget about it for 48 hours. You just got to be a day ahead on your prep but it's worth it for the perfect grains. Also dry them shits well before you PC.

Got a tissue plate/poor transfer with excess moisture/runny bacterial colonies sitting on the sample/wedge? Tilt the plate to one side, and allow the moisture to run in one direction... This creates an easy vector for bacterial infection to follow, and a direction for the culture to run from said infection... I've saved cultures in as little as 1 transfer doing this in substantially infected plates...

Boiling grains helps to get them hydrated faster and it's easier to control the level of hydration in my personal opinion.

To each his own I rekon. I was just tired of seeing over cooked grains on the bottom of my pot and short of stirring often I don't see how to avoid the bottom cooking faster than the top. I said fuck it and started doing it in a bucket, haven't looked back. Plus the only pot large enough I have to cook that much grain in it is my PC. I would prefer to use it to PC jars.

Get a brewing pot for bulk grain prep.
Also pay attention to what you are doing in the kitchen. I barely stir my grains and I don't have overcooking troubles now that I actually pay attention to my grain instead of waiting for some arbitrary time mentioned by someone with an entirely different setup.

So harbor freight sells a 3 pack of stock pots a big ass pot a medium and a small its pretty damn cheap for the set. Use one hydrate/boil/simmer grains. Use another to boil a shitload of water. After grains are properly hydrated rinse then with boiling water. No starchy grains plus drying time is minimal. Im going to do a write up some day but yea buy the harbor freight pota they are cheap af and good quality.

That thing is sweet. I love my bucket tho. Lol. Plus I also use a lot of wbs and don't have to change anything when I do. My real thing is I only got one burner and one pot (my PC) and I try to run 20 jars a day. So my day is wake up. Dump the bucket of grains from yesterday on a screen in the sun to dry off. Fill bucket back up with grain and cover with water/rinse. Make lids/clean jars. Do agar work. Noc up jars from yesterday. Come back that afternoon and jar up grains and start cooking them. Throw a baby in the mix and it enough timers and paying attention for me already. Making it simple and fool proof as I can is important for me. But I might try it again a few times for the speed.

I just got my hand on industrial mycology book. Few interesting informations:
- Low pH stimulate more rhizomorphic growth
- Potassium in medium regulate volume of hyphae
- Preferred nitrogen source for most of fungi is ammonium cation
- Some species (shiitake, oyster, enokitake) exhibit "substrate memory" and it's preferred to expand them on consistent agar medias
- Basidiomycota grow faster on corn-based media - author propose to use agar with cornmeal
- Dog food agar is considered one of "standard media"
- Instruction for clearing cultures from molds - agar wedge is put into tube filled with sterillized substrate (sawdust + straw + ground bare corn cobs). Mycelium will outcompete molds at second end of tube (similar technique was presented somewhere on forum, but with jars).

When shroomery dies for weeks on end, don't forget that you can still access lots of stuff via the Internet Archive! Saved my arse these past weeks...
All of bod's stuff is on there, as is a bunch of other things. Sadly not everything, but there's a lot!
