MS as inoculate for oats...why not?
    #26110246 -

I've seen the recommendations against using MS to inoculate oats but not an explanation as to why it's not a good idea.  MS is all I've got right now and I would like to give it a go.

Syringes are inherently dirty (meaning they contain bacteria and/or mold most of the time) and BRF cakes are more resistant to contamination then grains so while spores to BRF works say 90% of the time spores to grains only works about 25% of the time and even then the grains are bacterial usually so you end up getting drastically reduced yields.

Oh I definitely agree! (I still do a batch of spores to grain occupationally when I'm waiting on agar to grow out) my percentages were just example numbers

But even when spores to grain works ive noticed they tend to be somewhat bacterial usually which can effect yield greatly

Yup, I've done it too. Your 25% figure is pretty accurate. A good syringe will usually give you some good jars. I've had a lot of syringes that wouldn't work.

On a side noteto the OP, once you get going take the time to mess with agar and go straight to pour with petris. Your grows will get WAY better with clean spawn.
