Homemade bed using High-Density Foam?
    #26083271 - 06/30/19 09:30 PM (4 years, 6 months ago)

So Im trying to brainstorm a way to make a homemade bed that I can take car-tent camping. In the past, Ive used a futon mattress, but due to money restrictions, I may have to make my own.

Anyone tried making a bed using large pieces of High-Density Foam? I know a place near me that sells the foam by itself.

Yeah! That's what I used for years as my camping pad. It was one of the most comfortable camping beds I've ever had. The one I had was about 3" thick and about the same size as a full-size mattress so it was bulky but at The time I had a camper van so I had the room. I used to just fold it in 3rds and tie it with a rope for storage.

YES!

That's the answer I was looking for. That was my plan too, get three 3ft sections or so and tie with a rope/ratchet straps.

What was the approximate cost for that foam?

Sorry, I don't remember. It was about 15 years ago so I doubt the prices would be comparable anyway.

I don't know how you feel about used bed stuff but I did a craigslist search in my area and found a camper mattress for 30 bucks. One great thing about high density foam is it doesn't support bedbugs. Mold and mildew can be issues though.

Oh, another idea if you're looking for cheap alternatives. I've also used a gym mat. Just the regular three fold ones that come in blue and red. Not as comfy as the foam but totally fine. Something else you could probably get used for next to nothing. Plus since those are wrapped in that vinyl like stuff it was super easy to wipe down and keep clean

True that.

I actually went to that foam store, the prices were too high for me. I think it was around $100 for a 6ft x 3ft x 6" deep piece. I couldnt afford it. But i just bought a twin air-mattress. That is actually pretty comfortable. I knew the twin would be a good choice because its smaller and would hold my body up better off the ground.

So not really a DIY but it worked out with the Twin Air Mattress
