How is the moisture of my grains?
    #26101518 - 07/11/19 03:44 AM (5 years, 6 months ago)

So I followed bod's oat tek step by step. I let the oats sit for a good 4 hours or so after boiling them. They didn't leave hardly any moisture on a paper towel. I pressured cooked at 15psi for 2 hours. I am worried that they're too wet though. I know dry = good, wet = bad.

Next time try laying them on a towel in front of a fan.

They do look a little wet. They could still work out for you though. I just did some jars with oats that we're sitting out overnight. I find that it's better to have them be a little on the dry side because the inside is still wet

i would not put those grains in my jars...
too wet, i see burst grains too. Maybe use a different grain hydration method. Or just do that one better.

Never done oats but they do look wet. There is starchy goo everywhere. Are these pics right out of the PC? Might improve after a day but probably better bet to just do over instead of waiting.

I dry the shit out of my grains. On a screen in the sun for a morning usually will do it. When you think you got them too dry that's when they are dry enough. Got some out there RN just waiting on the sun.

And yep too may burst grain in your jar. I'd suggest trying a hot 24 hour soak. Works well just takes a while. Here is a jar I just inculated  an hour ago. Condisation is going to happen no matter what. But if you get them dry enough it will be a none issue.

Check it with a peace of toilet paper. A paper towel is a lot thicker.

I have "bastardized" the systems that I have read on here.    to my own end.

I soak for about 12-18 hours.
and then,    drain them off,    and then dump them into boiling water for 20 min.

My primary reasons for doing this.

I believe the soak helps kill make the PC work better.
and I believe that boiling them, makes them hot and steamy

I know    dur.

but having hot grains,  makes drying them feel so much more intuitive.
Once I spread them thin,  I only dry them  10-15 min.  painless.

Also, as suggested and likely out of date,  a couple spoonfuls of Verm  on the bottom of the jar, helps prevent pooling water and excess moisture.
(Every mix I do, I leave 2 without, and it has had no impact)
but I do it anyway.

As the people here are oats people.
I have to ask,  anyone ever have single BLACK  dots on the side of the glass?
It does not spread,  it did not fuzz,  it did not move, or scream for sanctuary,  It literally just looks like wet dirt, pressed up against the side of the glass,  need I worry?

I have only done 2 sets with oats.  Just to bother the people here.
My last two corn jars, are doing GREAT.  Oats are so much less expensive. But all the talk of endo in the corm, pft.

I like to let my oats chill in a strainer on the counter for an hour or two then into the fridge overnight before loading and PC'ing

I figured this was the case. Again, I followed bod's tek step by step. I must have boiled them too long. Would that explain why a bunch burst? I will make some more, boil for less time and let sit overnight in front of a fan :p

I find that bod's tek asks them to be boiled a little long for my taste. Too many burst grains. I got how I do mine in my sig, I still get some burst grain, but not too bad

Okay! I think I made these pretty well. I boiled for 25 min, sat them out in front of a fan for the night, and then a few hours in the sun. They were pretty dry when I pced them 24 hours later. This is a pic fresh out the pc. It's only wet on top because I gave them a good shake.

I don't think I've ever made my grains too dry. Never dry enough!

I put mine in the stock pot, set the timer for 30 and start the flame. Dry in colander for 30 minutes, fan dry on a towel for about 4 hours, occasionally mixing and flattening back out.

You want them the same shade of tan they are before you cooked them. Should look light colored out of the pc too.

I dry mine on screens overnight 10 hours or so. They're dry as fuck when they go in the PC but look wet again upon coming out. Then I shake every jar once every few hours and after awhile all the grains have reabsorbed the moisture. Shaking the jar to redistribute the moisture may be to no avail if the grains weren't properly dried in the first place.

I've been wondering if I'm drying mine too much lately as my g2g takes 2+ weeks for full colonization and the myc is a bit wispy. Might just be how the strain behaves though

Well I shot them up with some LC, so I guess we will see. Next time I will shoot for ever less wet grains.

I waited about 4 hours after PC when they felt almost room temp. Was that enough wait time?

I keep shaking them until all the moisture is reabsorbed after I pull them out of the PC then inoculate. I don't want to shake them but once after I inoculate and if there is still moisture all over the place I'd either have to keep shaking it or just let it sit there and pray I don't see bacteria blooming. Of course if your grains go into the PC too wet there may be no amount of shaking and redistributing moisture to get it all back into the grains afterwards. Normally it takes me a bit longer than 4 hours out of the PC to periodically shake the grains and get all the moisture reabsorbed

I followed a wheat tek that needed the cook time to be reduced quite a bit. My suspicion is that a grain's moisture out of the bag perhaps varies between distributors, regions, brands, seasons, retailers etc. enough to affect the prep.

I thought this looked too dry after the PC, but guess it isn't. :mushroom:

That looks juicy. Monitoring the process and getting a look and feel for the finished/perfect grains is essential. There will always be variables that will require some tweaking to the steps as you go but the end result should never change
