Man's unbridled lust * 2
    #26100181 -

Ours is a planet demented with lust. The intensity of our sexual wants is no lesser than that of a dog or a jackrabbit, however dignified we fancy ourselves to be. And all this gets in the way of absolutely everything.

The movie Dr. Strangelove, one of my very favorites, depicts this reality in an outstanding and uncanny way. Its thesis is that we are all just blundering around this place, our most important objective being to get laid. At the end, Dr. Strangelove suggests that a select group be chosen to descend into mine-shafts to wait out the nuclear winter, in which there will be several females for every male, and selection will be made based on genetic and aesthetic characteristics. These plans being made in the midst of a nuclear holocaust.

I wonder if some of you see things the same way. Can you imagine a world without sex? Or rather, without sex being the central element of every individual's consciousness? Is it not in fact true that social-sexual behaviors color and more often than not determine almost everything that is going on? I have to wonder what an alien from above, observing our species, would be thinking. Probably that we are demented with an unbridled lust, and let's turn around.

Whether it's just my increasing age/wisdom, or my periods of enforced celibacy, or my naturally inquisitive mind which is always stoked at dealing with/understanding human relationships (and so therefore, by default; human sexuality), I must admit that more and more, I find this point slapping me in the face as I observe the world.

Hell, maybe it's the fact that flagrant and open sexuality is on the increase too? When looking back at say, an old Victorian era photo, I'm stunned at the female dress sense as compared to today, and yet, somehow, I suspect that the dominance of sexuality was just the same as it is now - only more repressed.

I find it a struggle, I must admit, to accept and integrate how high up on the agenda of others/my own existence sexuality stacks - but then - I've always struggled with acceptance when it comes to observation of the human condition. It's an ongoing process, and I've been picking up the ball with it again of late, after having dropped it for several years.

Back to your OP though (and it is a great one), I think there's a central element which is sorely overlooked by most of us; discipline.

Had we more of that, we probably wouldn't look like such demented creatures when observed from above.

I wish we had more of that. It's bloody hard though. I'm a practitioner of it and still feel out of control - and yet - some people who meet me call me 'the most disciplined person I know'.

Do you think the ability to flaunt your sexuality over the airwaves is having a detrimental effect to us as a species?

Is it breaking down the walls of our discipline, giving us so much material to lust over?

lust is life force, unbridled it is mad, but with a bit of bridle training it is enjoyable and good.

Distraction and sex is an important thing.  Because, yeah, it can potentially be incredibly distracting.  To the point where you can ruin your life.  I’ve found a few things with it.  Either the distraction is mostly my own fault because of self discipline issues which could be damn near anything.  Or whatever it is that is so distracting is so damn good that it justifies the distraction.

For example when I start having tweaks and am losing my train of thought checking out at the grocery store answering very basic questions I know that I have lost my grip on the thing.  This is likely some sort of discipline issue.  In fact it’s at its best when one is in control of it and is naturally expressed in an appropriate way.  So no, sex itself is in no way bad.  People can **** it up however.

The older I get, the more I think it's kindof strange how much of our society is obsessed with sex. It's like alcohol, when I was younger and drank a lot, I didn't think about how obsessed our society is with alcohol, but now that I'm older it seems kindof odd.

I mean, sex is great and everything, but it's just weird how some people totally bend their whole lives around it obsessively like it's the only thing in life that matters. And it's not just people who do it a lot, but also people like incels and stuff like that. Some people are so obsessed with it that they end up killing people over it which is just bizarre. There's a hell of a lot more to life than just sex.

Sometimes I even regret all the time when I was young that I put into sex instead of accomplishing real things in life. Maybe I could have really done something with my life if I hadn't spent so much time chasing pussy.

I agree that in the past, sexual repression was probably more of a mitigating factor, but then, on the other hand, cultures of old seemed to have been more inclined toward a belief in and practice of virtue, which probably tempered some of the outright sexual urges, and which by now is totally gone. Perhaps that was associated with some sort of wider discipline, as you mention. Clearly, sexuality has exploded in the modern world, and it doesn't help that it sells so well.

I definitely think that this proliferation of sex in western culture is probably having some sort of detrimental effect, possibly because it simply forces people to think about sex constantly. I would say notions of discipline are powerless against something like the internet, where society and sexuality meet all the time for billions of people. Moreover, 99% of all advertising seems to be based on it.

So we're a horny species constantly being bombarded with sexual images and ideas and suggestions. I think lust as a phenomenon is as robust as it has ever been. I'm not against sex per se, but too much of a good thing is unhealthy, whatever it is. And our species definitely did not need the boost from the mass media that it has gotten.

I don't really think that highly of sex, there's not that much there that's particularly worthwhile imo. Even the higher forms of romantic love and lust it seem to me like a pulling away from self and spirit, for all it's ecstacies. But it's a strong biological desire that should be treated with respect and a little caution. If it weren't for the fact that celibacy seems to make me tense I probably wouldn't bother with it at all. For the most part I prefer that state. But eventually I want to relieve that tension somehow and thereafter it's compulsive.

We love sex so much that there are several belief systems throughout history who worship the act, intentionally or not, the symbolism is overt enough in nearly every major religon. it's a big part of being human so it's to be expected.
I think aliens would acknowledge its a successful strategy for the propagation of the species, but a clear marker of primitive ages.
Still DNA robots..mine as well embrace it with tantric practice and rapture.

Like other desires, obsession with sex seems like a misguided attempt to find lasting bliss/happiness in the world, a symptom of some lack we feel we have. It just happens to be the most powerful, and is instinctively hard-wired in. I mean it is the most powerful creative force we have access to in this world.

Quote:
the symbolism is overt enough in nearly every major religon.

I think the symbolism in religions and mystical traditions is mostly misunderstood though. The essence of a lot of spiritual traditions is unifying the masculine and feminine energies on a spiritual level, but this is often symbolised in the way that we can understand it, on the physical level.  Tantra is the perfect example. Tantra is a mystical tradition where you learn how to work with inner energies to achieve Enlightenment, and doesn't necessarily have to include physical sex at all. But go join any Tantra group of Facebook and what you will find are a load of people looking for liberation and freedom in their sex lives. That guy from American Pie springs to mind, lol...It's so misunderstood and distorted.

Sex is not, nor has it ever been the central motive of my consciousness. I am not primarily a 2nd chakra personality whose dynamics are best described by the theories of Sigmund Freud the unparalleled spokesperson (despite his sexist errors) of the anal-genital Root Center (the combined Muladhara and Svadhisthana chakra zones). Now, at the age of 66, sex is relatively rare owing to a tremendous decrease in sexual desire over the last 5 years accompanied by male problems. After one has been with one's partner for over 20 years and novelty has faded, but monogamy is the rule, sex is 'Meh, been there, done that.' Besides, the previous 20 years between 20 and 40 really were never going to be surpassed.  Admittedly, I definitely felt the rather rapid loss as a blow to my masculinity and a wake up call to my mortality. I sometimes feel badly for my wife, but she has never been particularly 2nd chakra determined either, even though we used to have lots of sex 20+ years ago. As long as love, affection, playfulness  and intellectual discourse continue she seems to be OK. There is always auto-eroticism for both of it. My physician swears by it, he's three years older than me.

My Intellectual  and Intuitive life have expanded to compensate the diminished Instinctual life which at one point allowed me intercourse 6 times in a particularly horny night. Notice how the words Intellectual, Intuitive, and Instinctual all begin with the letter 'I.' They are roughly like the 3 souls in Plato's scheme, intellectual, passionate and appetitive. We all identify ourselves with each 'I' in differing degrees do we not? It is now time for the balance to shift again. I wanted to be desireless in my 20s and suffered celibacy during the worst possible stage of life. Now I am developing ataraxia and it frightened me initially although I am still vital, even stronger than in my youth with more muscular definition than I had 30 years ago. My hair still grows. Go figure. A new book arrived in today's mail to join the other partly read volumes next to my therapy chair. This one is The Life of the Mind by Hanna Arendt. As long as my vision holds I'll live. I was recently diagnosed with macular degeneration in my right eye, dry form and 3 retinal tears in my left (which were Lasered 200+ zaps). Death of my cock's spirit is one thing, blindness and I follow Icelander.

Dr. Strangelove was my #1 fav film since I first saw it when it came to theaters in 1964. Like Freud's two major forces, Eros and Thanatos, Love and Death, the film is all about death on a global scale and after the Doomsday Device detonates, sex in deep mines really pales in comparison despite Dr. Strangelove's most lascivious optimism. The 93 year half-life of Cobalt-Thorium G would certainly not be the only problem along with the Strontium 90, Cesium 37, Plutonium 239, and who but a nuclear physicist knows what else with half-lives thousands of year long. Incest would retard the mine dwellers in a few generations, food would be nigh unto impossible to cultivate, and let's face it, the planet WAS doomed. Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper murdered all of us, Thanatos always wins in the end.

...I pressed her thigh and death smiled

Death, old friend
Death and my cock are the world
I can forgive my injuries in the name of
Wisdom, luxury, romance

Sentence upon sentence
Words are healing lament
For the death of my cock's spirit
Has no meaning in the soft fire
Words got me the wound and will get me well
If you believe it

All join now and lament for the death of my cock
A tongue of knowledge in the feathered night
Boys get crazy in the head and suffer
I sacrifice my cock in the altar of silence. - Jim Morrison, 'Lament'

Pretty much.

However, you put it sex pervades our culture and thought.
Most people reach cultured status and beyond that, lies pure hedonism in lieu of cultural leisure.
It seems born of an attempt to break free of the bounds placed by culture with regards towards sex and the subsequent unbridled repressed lust of man. A testament to mans hubris.
And in result, a move beyond hedonism becomes possible as greater mastery of pleasure (a huge driver of lust) begets control of sexual thoughts in such a way that they are transcended and a more enlightened way of thinking becomes the mode.
When I imagine life without sex as the theme, I imagine being old and wise.

at 68, for me, it is still attractive and mysterious - I am delighted to be anywhere in the midst of it's perfumed veils, warm touches, and alluring eyes - I may not have quite the same stamina, but romance remains compelling.

Because I’m a person.  From my perspective they are bad.  I can imagine a more objective and “higher” stance in the sense that people are just another thing and things like disease are just another part of the ticket etc. but somehow that doesn’t seem as authentic.  At some point you have to draw the line and make a judgement right ?

I asked a female friend her opinion on OP. I think it's a good take:

[11/07, 18:13] Christina: A world without sex would make the world a lot less human because sex is probably the strongest connection two people can share besides childbirth
[11/07, 18:17] Christina: The fact that we live in a point in time where people that feel unloved want so badly to use that connection to feel that kind of bond with another or to fill a void within themselves or the fact that others use sex and make it about only pure lust & pollute what it’s really about shouldn’t take away its power and sanctity
[11/07, 18:19] Christina: Take it away and we really are subhuman

That's an especially female point of view, you understand. Which is fine, of course. Clearly we're not ever going to exist as humans in a world without sex. That was more of a thought experiment. The main premise remains that the human animal is obsessed with its 'special purpose.' And obsession is never pretty.

Is there really anything so sacred about sex though? Whatever higher feelings get involved the root of it just seems to be lust to me. Maybe some consider that sacred.
