Drying! Air speed and humidity...

Hi!

2 questions:

1. What is the maximum air humidity that will work for drying shrooms? If I fan dry them, what is the max humidity to allow their moisturise to dissipate?

2. What fan speed is best for drying? Super high, super low, or in the middle?

NO I DO NOT HAVE A DEHYDRATOR AND NO I CANNOT GET ONE :laugh:

Fan dry for 24-48 hours as high as possible just so that everything won’t blow everywhere...then seal in an airtight container with a load of silica gel packets to pull remaining moisture out.

Storage - similar idea...once fully dry keep in airtight bag or another airtight container with one packet of silica

Simple!

No need for anything else.

1. 0% this is why fanning sucks. They will not get cracker dry if the air has any humidity. Use a food dehydrator set to at least 160

2. The one pointing towards your oven since for whatever reason you can't get a food dehydrator in a country with an internet connection

Moving air will suffice. I live in a rather humid area but do run a dehumidifier in house. Ambient humidity is typically well over 50% in-house. This can and does spike often, right now its over 60% on top floor yet dehumidifier in basement is running non stop for many weeks. Outside it averages high 90% humidity for half the year.

I have dried them by pointing a fan directly at them on medium. Fan speed is a bit trivial... speed more so helps ensure you get a fairly even amount of air flow across all that you are trying to dry. I do not see much difference between medium and high. Though I would not recommend low.

Unfortunately, BOD is right. There is very little chance you will end up with a properly dried batch like this.

However... if you are planning on consuming relatively soon, and will be doing so personally (meaning they aren't going to be sold, or kicked down the road to end up going bad on someone else...) then I will offer one productive tip that will give you a much better chance of success should you choose to go this route.

If you sandwich "the goods" between some pieces of screen (two pieces on each side of the sandwich preferably) you can get a much more direct application of the fan set on super high without losing any precious cargo in the whirlwind. Make sure all of the edges are secured/weighted down first!

Ah hem! Proof here, my case has no flaws. 100% cracker dry every time.

Might I add,a fan alone will get you no where. I’ll mention quickly so excuse if I’m not descriptive enough

Cardboard box, line the arse of it with paper kitchen towels (good absorbent stuff) don’t be shy with the amount of sheets you use, it’s cheaper than a dehydrator. So big hole on top for fan and small holes around sides for outflow. Spread them bad boys out good... Now go blast for 24-48hrs under fan, give or take. Maybe change towels (I don’t)

Next step; this bit may need attention but from me I know by eye when the time is right for next step.

Now once dry enough; and the best way I can explain this is when in this order, the fruits are shrivelled up, looks dry, feel dry to the touch and when tapped with the finger nail will sound and feel different. It just sounds different. Either way it will take up to 48hrs give or take

From here seal into airtight container with loads of silica packets until cracker dry which will be another few days, I also add paper towel here to but maybe a sheet or two.


Preserving is an art in itself I suppose

four days max for me, I never really check after fanning cause it’s always sweet. Four days is fine cause if I planned on eating them any sooner they’d be in the fridge. Logic.

Interesting, I've fan dried pounds of various kinds of mushrooms without issue. Don't get me wrong, I do NOW have a large dehumidifier whose exhaust I channel past some screen-trays. I just find it interesting that I've had so little issue via fan-only drying. I'm almost positive I never did more than perhaps lay them on brown-paper, itself layered into cardboard boxes, which were placed near fan.

    No doubt though, a dedicated device like dehumidifier or dehydrator will always be ideal. Its just that you can absolutely get cracker dry even in relatively high humidity... you're just taking much more risk than the preferred alternatives. Even an oven, as many have stated, would be an improvement.

Look at mushboys thread cracker dry comparison. Fruits seem cracker dry long before they actually are. Left for a week they end up bendy you know you didn't dry enough.

With all do respect that makes no sense to me if you had enough money to start growing shrooms. A $30 investment in keeping your hard work from going bad... Costs less than a bag of weed, less than it cost to start growing, less than a bag of mushrooms costs. $30 is breaking the bank why would you be growing?

The longer it takes to dry the less potency you're locking in too.

Yeah mine are defo cracker dry, turns to dust when ground and potency kicks ass too so...?

As for investing in a dehydrator, I agree but for me right now working on a small scale it is sufficient. It is in the pipeline but as I say I’m small scale plus learning agar is my focus right now cause I just hit my first green contam but I ditched the liquid culture and I’m taking the spores in question to agar first before I proceed with that strain

This might belong in the "confessions of a..." thread, but let me tell you how I used to dry mine.

Paper towel on top of my PMP, lamp with an incandescent blue light bulb like two inches from the shrooms laid out on the paper towel.

Believe it or not, it actually worked pretty fuckin well.  Not "cracker" dry, but dry enough that they'd snap after a week in the freezer.

well...

back then those old CRT dealies ran kinda hot but it was a tard method for sure. my parents had a dehydrator in the shed i was just too stupid to use it:lol::blush:

but it got them crackerr dry in 24hrs. of course i was growing small-med shrooms back then because of other noob reasons.
