Flowhood maintenance question.

Wonder what kinds of tricks and tips yall have for maintaining your hoods. Do you spray em down with lysol before you start working? is there anything in particular I should be doing to keep my filter in a good healthy standing?

Prefilters so the HEPA stops only the smallest particles will make it last longer.

I've definitely got a nice prefilter. I was just wondering if anyone does stuff like spraying it down with lysol?

Worried about uglies in the filter?

I sprayed mine lightly a couple times, but I feel stupid about it now.

I don't spray mine. But I do run it for a few minutes before I work just in case...

I spray mine between the prefilter and let it get in the cabinet. Is that a bad idea?

And i run mine for a couple hours before working.

Hello!

I made my own hood. I use a prefilter, of high quality. This is changed routinely, and is key to longevity of the HEPA laminar flow filter. I clean the general area, but the hood itself is plywood, unfinished.

The real concern for us is stirring up existing contaminants, and thereby giving them opportunity to fall or waft down onto shit we care about. Laminar Hoods function not primarily because of filtration, but primarily because of the properties of laminar fluid flow - namely that it does not kick up dust dirt or debris as it will gently pick it up and carry it evenly away, as opposed to spewing it about and churning it up in the airflow. This goes for contaminants inside the 'working area' directly infront of the filter.

In other words, you can have a dirty hood and still perform just fine. Same principle as a SAB, you want the dust you kick up by turning ON the fan to have a chance to settle and stop floating around.

Spray ISO around the area, sure some on the hepa if you want, sure dont bother if you dont want to. But the key is to give it time to run so that any turbulence you create in the room, which kicks up contaminants, has ample time to settle down and get filtered through the box itself.

These HVAC squirrel cage blowers are industrial devices, their duty cycles ( expected regular usage ) is massive. I got my blower from some HVAC buddies a few years ago, and I have literally left it running for weeks on end before (mold issue at a relatives, brought it over to filter the in-home air for people) and I have never had an issue.

I have also performed controlled testing using open agar plates for 20 minutes (or more) infront of the hood. I've done this with, and without using an ISO pre-spray around the surrounding area. I have done this with and without letting the filter system run for various lengths of time prior to my work.

YMMV, but personally my hood runs for a MINIMUM of 1 hour prior to my work. I find the ISO makes me feel better and certainly can do SOME good, but I do not find it statistically significant, at all, in my controlled testing described just above this statement. Don't get me wrong, ISO sanitizing the work area is great standard practice, but my point I wish to highlight is that the bigger factor is letting that fan run and filter out the ambient environment for some time prior to starting sterile work.

I also recommend using a wire grate / tray / similar object. This allows most contaminants to fall between the bars or the grating, landing on the (in my case, glass) surface below. As a personal rule of thumb I treat the actual bottom surface (glass table for me) as LAVA - Like that floor-is-lava game many of us played as kids. I have NEVER done any testing, but I just presume that the underlying surface will be inherently dirty so I use the wire grate/tray to just avoid that risk entirely.

Maybe its time I take some swabs and test on agar. I am actually about to pour plates as soon as I post this. Hmmmm......

****EDIT: OH! Also - I treat the space in between filters as a NO-ZONE. I minimize all exposure there, even working quickly to swap the pre-filter itself. When i transport or dissasemble I work to temporarily 'seal' or 'cover' the opening in some manner. I do this more so to prevent physical particulates from entering the chamber.. although I suppose the more physically clean the chamber is then the less places there will be for germs to take hold and propagate.
