Well, I have made nearly 100 brf cakes without contam now, so I am feeling ready to move on to larger jars with grains or popcorn. Could someone point me to a good guide for such a venture on here? :-)

Might wanna start with agar to make clean cultures for your grain. Bod has a great write-up for agar too. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21922023

Yeah... I have thought about it, but I have some clean LC, so I will probably make some grains in the meantime!

Tho it's possible to easily spot a contaminated LC, it may prove almost unpossible to determine that a LC is completely clean unless it has been tested Just giving you heads up, maybe don't inoculate 20 grain jars right away with LC made from spores

it sounds so innocent the way you say it. God bless you
But... The first rule of LC club, always use clean live culture to inoculate the LC solution keeping sterile conditions inside the LC jar at all times. Second rule of LC club, never inoculate an LC with spores that have been grown and printed in unsterile conditions (basically every spore print ever printed) gl

I tested it... which is why I said it's clean...

Two shay! Ba dum TSS!
May I inquire suspiciously abuuuuuut what what kind of medium or substrate you tested the LC?
If you answer "BRF cakes" that you fruited successfully then I will interject with a HA! and post a meme of Nelson from Simpsons and eat more popcorn
Maybetry out some no pour agar container while you wait to order petris? Agar will be essential when you start working with grain anyway so might as well dive in to that too if you're going grain

Well... I guess the Nelson meme in incoming. Tested it on some BRF cakes that I have yet to fruit
Why would BRF cakes not be suitable for testing LC?

Aah, the Nelson Mandala affect
For example BRF cakes and other solid substrates do not provide a very good climate for propagation of bacteria. Bacteria thrives in wet places like liquid. Your LC may actually be clean even tho it has been inoculated with spores even tho that's as mentioned a big no no, mostly because it's not so easy to always spot how clean a LC is and it need to be tested on a medium like agar that provides close to optimal conditions for a variety of organisms such as molds, bacteria, yiest and whatnot.

Might as well give it a shot for now and work on agar in the near future :-)

For example if you have wet spots in your too wet prepped grain then even a tiny bacterial colony that you introduce during inoculation might critically affect your spawn jar. If the same bacterial colony was inoculated into perfectly prepped grain with minimum or zero moisture inside the jar or on top of the grains then your chances of successfully colonizing the jars with intended organism increases a lot. Grain prep takes a time or two to of doing it to get it right but it's easy peasy with good grain and harder with other grains
