What's everyone's favorite dehydrator?
    #26098360 -

Basically no one around here carries them, so I'm forced to buy one online.  What's everyone's favorite, and why?

I read many reviews, and ended up buying a 5 trays Excalibur dehydrator : Really satisfied so far !

I got a cuisinart and it works well even with more trays than it claims acceptable. I find that if I am dehydrating lbs I must squish em alot. There are big, and costly, units that hold much more than the stackable types.

The cheapest one! Ha!

I grabbed mine for $6 at the thrift store, hasn't let me down since. It's a Ronco, but really, they're just big hair driers. They all good at the low price end.

I would just reccomend not getting a unit with the heating element on the top.

I got one at a thrift store that was basically just a heating element on the bottom with no fan, and I'm thoroughly unimpressed.  I didn't even know they made them with heating from the top, I guess I don't know how that would make sense?

If I have a recommendation for you : Check second hand (Kijiji, etc.) because dehydrators are like exercise bike, they buy it, never use it and ends up selling them back

I thought I needed a fancy one but it turns out 160f is the perfect temperature. I tried with lower temperatures and it freaking sucks.

I figure, given heat rises, the units with the element on top are less efficient than the opposite design. To be a food dehydrator the unit must circulate the heated air. ThePoopTree sounds like that unit was borked or bunk. :2cents: While you don't need a fancy dehydrator I do believe they crank out at 160-180°F on high, I know mine does, but it's not the most fancy unit.

In general Excalibur dehydrators are generally accepted as the best, but they are Expensive!

I just ordered this one. It comes in tomorrow. I'll let you know how it is

I am willing to shell out more for quality.  I have a "buy it for life" mentality.

80 bucks doesn't seem bad for that model...

Shop on amazon, got me a 5 tray adjustable height that only has the element on the bottom with a fan. Fits a lot and it’s only one button, then set a timer. Super cheap and like I said amazon. Under $40 Chefman

Well, I found a local shop that carried a Cuisinart DHR-20.  Has good reviews, so hopefully it works!

Unless you're doing over a dry pound a week a American harvest/presto dehydrator is already overkill
You can easily fit over 8oz dried in a normal presto dehydrator with no extra trays.

Two dry pounds a week probably get away with one dehydrator or just more trays.

Three dry a week get two dehydrators

4+ dry pounds a week get an Excalibur

8+ make a bulk dehydrator.

They had an Excalibur too, but it was 269 bucks vs 70 for the Cuisinart...

My first dehydrator was home made. It was a plywood box made to size my cookie cooling racks with vents in the bottom. I spray tacked aluminum foil on the inside. Put a heat lamp on the bottom and a computer fan on the top. It worked fine. It was big and clunky though

I got a cheap 5 rack sucker with heat and fan on the top-side. Does me just fine running on a hotter temp. Also, I've used paper bags and silica gel throughout my mushroom hunting career with great success. It absorbs and wicks off moisture well enough to turn some mushrooms into crunchy chips!
